Description
Aaaand another new character, and another member of the Imperial Knights to boot!
Meet Eventide, poet, artist, amateur mystic, and shadowmancer. Despite his artistic and intellectual bents he is very much of the streets, even if only in spirit nowadays, remembering a more rough and tumble time of smoking and drinking at tiny concerts and slam poetry recitals at back alley bars and taverns. He's done with the hard drugs and has even abandoned smoking (except for the occasional blunt), but can still go for a pint. Challenger and him are frequent bar patrons, even though they tend to prefer different kinds of establishments, owing to their distinct tastes and personalities, with Eventide's quiet, thoughtful persona contrasting with the brash and loud Challenger. A frequent sight is Challenger in the thick of a brawl, while Eventide literally lurks in the shadows, quietly sipping his pint as he watches, seldom bothered by the participants; the few who manage to notice him on the periphery and attempt to challenge him will find out why you should be truly afraid of the dark, though Eventide may just let his shadows touch their minds just enough to dissuade would-be attackers without traumatizing them. Sometimes though he may need to draw Challenger away from a fight, enveloping the duo in darkness to transport them several miles away, or using a shadow to enter Challenger's mind and calm him down, which he has also done with Red Dragon at times, provided Lionheart has given authorization first. But when the Knights need to make a quick getaway or get to somewhere quickly as a group, Eventide is the man for the job, even taking them to closely parallel dimensions like Otherworld and even into the minds of others within the mental plane of existence. This ability to shift the primary aspect of existence is what allows him to control shadows, make them a part of himself, and solidify them into objects and even "creatures" of various shapes and sizes, cementing his reputation as the creepiest member of the group as far as the mainstream public is concerned. Yet those who know him know that despite the brooding, moody persona he projects, he is actually quite nice and gentle, with a love of encouraging young writers and artists to pursue their talents and passions. He even has a small but loyal following of fans of his old poetry, paintings, and brief career as a singer for a band, so he can sometimes be seen signing autographs for a small crowd. Thus, despite his talent and nature for darkness, he shines light in the lives of others, which is ultimately what he values more than anything else.
And that's Eventide! Originally he was a much more traditionally superheroic looking character (and indeed, I still have a notion of doing that, as you don't usually see shadow users with standard superhero tights and aesthetic), but as I developed him in my mind I recalled a notion I recalled an article I read about Alan Moore and the creation of John Constatine and how the impetus was to create a "working class" mystic who looked less like your traditional wizard in fancy robes and more like some guy on the street. I've seen others attempt to make characters like that, and usually they end up looking like clones of Constatine, so I decided to go in a different direction, drawing inspiration from Neil Gaiman (particularly young Gaiman from early on in his career in the 80s). That seemed to do the trick, as his shadows would be the main visual "selling point" of the character. From there it was all pretty straightforward. I did have fun making the "hands in pockets" pose for him, ever so slightly shifting around the arms for it.
Anyway, that's all for now! I hope you guys like Eventide, and stay tuned for more new and updated character goodness.
