This is elegant and exceptional! So much movement and soft texture captured in such a hard, immovable medium. So much to look at!

It's odd, even though it's cast in (bronze?), I really get the impression of a rubbery membrane.
Beautiful.

One of my art teachers was a bronze sculptor so I kinda understood what it took to do a piece, but I couldn't imagine doing something with such squiggly curves and flowy tentacles. I love it's so life like! I would love to have one of my own!

Thank you very much for the compliment! It is a heap of work for sure. But a labor of love. Thank you!

Did you made this direct out of a wax model? Or did you do a clay or something-model first?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bronze4u In reply to KuKluxKlown [2011-06-06 18:36:42 +0000 UTC]

I sculpted it hollow straight from wax. Then molded it with a rubber mold.

I was just talking with some friends of mine about your sculpture (sculptors as well) and how you managed it to even model it in wax and then casting it in bronze as an hollow form. You didn't cast it at once, right?
But the main question was the modelling...what substance is formable like this to make an hollow model ready to cast?
Give us answers!!

bronze4u In reply to KuKluxKlown [2011-06-15 19:35:56 +0000 UTC]

I sculpt the original hollow from casting wax (foundry wax)
It is cast without the tentacles, and has various plugs cut out, all of course then welded back in, and back on.

After I sculpt the hollow original from wax, I make a rubber mold for the wax duplicates, as you know....Some of what I do will remain a ancient Chinese secret!
