Not sure how I got this idea, but ~Bendersminion helped me finalize it a little bit. Anyways, Birdo is a dude that wants to be a chick, and apparently Yoshi didn't know of this until he read the instruction manual that clearly states, "Birdo thinks he is a girl and likes to be called Birdetta. He likes to wear a bow on his head and shoot eggs from his mouth."... I feel kinda bad for Yoshi for some odd reason. No, I think he just made fun of how everyone thought that Birdo was a girl until everyone heard that she used to be a guy in Mario Bros 2. I heard somewhere that Nintendo changed her gender to a girl in every appearance afterwards though.

I don't think you understand my comment..and possibly, what a transgender woman/girl even is? I'll elaborate.
Birdetta/Catherine was always a transgender girl, based on her origins in Super Mario Bros 2. the manual states that "he is a boy who thinks he is a girl". This is basically an ignorant way of saying someone is transgender. Her sex is male, her gender is female. and yes, Nintendo has flipflopped around about it a lot. They have a very bad record of erasing the lgbt aspects of characters in their USA games, such as Birdetta and vivian, not to mention their removal of gay couples in their game Tomogachi life. They've ranged from calling her "he" to "she" to "it". They've also made some crude remarks at her expense over in Japan. It's also very disrespectful that they establish that she wants to be called Birdetta, but continue to call her Birdo as if to mock her wishes. (something that happens to real transgender people all the time)
and yes, Birdetta probably "used to be a guy", to put it in crude terms. That doesn't stop this joke from being harmful. He's making it at the expense of transgender woman, reinforcing the tired old stereotypes and misconceptions that get hundreds of us murdered every year. It's "Funny" that Birdetta "Tricked" Yoshi because she's not a "real" girl. We should feel "sorry" for him and consider him "emasculated" because transgender women are looked down upon as something embrassing and unworthy of love or intimacy. My wife has had loved ones MURDERED because of this mentality being so present in the male population.
This alone is very offensive to me, but it adds insult to injury because he made a picture for my ex-boyfriend many years ago of him and I, and I myself am transgender, as are many of my friends and loved ones. There's a chance he didn't know I was transgender when he made the picture, but it doesn't change the fact that he later when and made this comic, being yet another person to attack my kind based solely on what we are and painting the previous image in a very ugly light as well.
