As the first sanctum most outsiders will encounter, Laos would be damned not to make a perfect first impression in Ignacio's name. Kindhearted and open minded to all walks of life, Laos grants solace for all who seek it, his grand effigy to Cascade a familiar face for those who have been bound at sea for lengths at a time. While his loyalty will always reside with Ignacio, Laos has grown a placid fondness for the wave mother, and prefers to see the deities as yin and yang, lost without the other.

But his meekness should not be mistaken for weakness, as he's demonstrated many a time after forcefully removing boisterous, drunk rogues from his sanctum, especially after sheltering red lantern workers who wished to flee them. He makes a point never to choose what is right for someone, rather allow them to come to the realization themselves. The entire red lantern district would be welcome in his sanctum, and he would never insist on changing them, but instead pray that their souls find peace in what they do, or in a way out. He is truly selfless and his gospel reflects that.

He prefers to remain detached and objective when counseling a patron, but once he's delved into their story and invested in their well being it is hard not to become possessive over his congregation. Hours of prayer have been dedicated to keeping a pacifist outlook when one of his patrons strays from his sanctum, or worse, something terrible has happened to them. Sex and sexual wellbeing are held in high esteem, and Laos can become slightly obsessive when counselling a past trauma or obstacle preventing someone from being truly sexually free. Sex is truly a spiritual experience for Laos, and he believes every sexual encounter should be. Modesty is thrown to the wind and sex with patrons and sanctum helpers is not uncommon for Laos.

History:

The Flamen of Enya sanctum have always been resilient, and Laos grew up no different, destined to take over when his father Bao retired. In that time, the guppy hippocampus saw miracles, devastation, witnessed the sanctum being robbed by pirates three separate occasions, and a pregnant patron give birth on the cool stone floor. His father taught him to turn no one away, keep your heart open as it is not your place to deliver judgement, a power reserved for the gods.

His parents knew he was cut from the same cloth early on, as even from a young age he enjoyed talking to the patrons and listening to their stories, his innocence and genuine empathy making him easy to talk to, and he was quickly a magnet for those who needed a good listener. As a teenager he prayed with the congregation regularly and walked the elderly to their homes, eager to be of service. So it was natural for his father to retire early and let his young son take over the sanctum at a bright-eyed twenty years old.

While the pious, disciplined, and devout seek out the more Roman Catholic of the sanctums, Fernos and Ignis, Enya has a more grassroots approach, with sermons following more shamanism, yoga, and animism principles, with the ultimate goal being liberation, physically and spiritually, so that the soul may transcend to the Starscape. Many sermons are held outside or on the sanctum's balconies during exceptionally beautiful days, and tantric rituals are preformed in the large bathing pools on the ground floor. Only tragic deaths are given funerals, and even then, are beautiful, as death and life are both celebrated within the sanctum with grand festivities and music and song until dawn. Patrons are encouraged to touch and interact with each other during worship, as energy, communal energy and well being are key to physical and spiritual healing.

Hostility is not permitted within Enya, whether it be between rogues, citizens, two patrons, or a master and their slave. All must be treated with the same respect once inside the sanctum's walls. Enya also provides sanctuary from persecution to anyone who claims it, and Laos will not stand aside no matter the circumstance.

Laos has shepherded his flock for 21 years now, with very few enemies. He relies heavily on his sanctum helpers, who are considered closer than family to him because they chose to be bonded to him over blood relation. Betrayal from any of his staff plummets him into a deep depression where he will not be seen for days. Minor infractions are always forgiven, but prejudice, theft, and slander are not tolerated and result in the sanctum helper on the street. He frowns upon stealing as any sanctum helper or patron could ask for the food out of his mouth and he would be happy to give it to them, but stealing is a blow to his character.He depends on the helpers to stand fast to keep the riffraff out, and to help him keep his thoughts organized as he is prone to forgetting due to how quickly his thought process is.
