My darling “child” Fili!

This lovely creature literally showed up at my family’s house one cloudy November and meowed pathetically from window to window with a nose full of snot until we let him in.

As we already had 3 cats and a German Shepherd at the time we tried to send him to the vet. They said they were full. And so we gained another feline. He needed his nose wiped daily and couldn’t purr but he loved all the noisy kids and befriended our massive German Shepherd the first day.

When he arrived he was tiny and pale with little dark ears. We also called him a “she.” It had been a long time goal of mine to name an animal from Tolkien’s writings. Due to “her” being so pale and dainty with gorgeous blue eyes I called “her” Arwen.

Cue Thanksgiving a couple weeks later where my cousin says, “I dunno... I think it’s a Legolas.”

Aragorn and Faramir were both my first choices for names but my family unfortunately drew the line. Fili was one of the dwarves who accompanied Thorin Oakenshield on his quest to defeat the dragon Smaug. In the movie adaptions Fili was blonde (and I believe in the books he was too) so appearance wise I decided it would work.

Since that November in 2014, Fili has grown in size, darkened over his entire body to have glorious stripes, and overcome his sickness and regained his purr!

We have also lost our dog and as of last Saturday, Fili is the only furry creature left in the house. A first in my immediate family’s history.

Fili was terribly sad when his last friend never returned, but we always make sure to tell him how special he is and now he’s settled into the luxurious life of an attractive, slightly fluffy, bachelor.
