Description

This is the late medieval, Orthodox chapel of  the Holy Spirit in Kodeń (Poland). Even though it is an Orthodox shrine, it is executed in a thoroughly Western, brick Gothic style popular in the Baltic region. Such syncretism of Orthodox affiliation and Latin architectural style is fairly rare and can be explained by the building’s location. The chapel currently stands on the extreme, eastern fringe of modern Poland, right on the border with Belarus which is literally just few hundred meters away. In the later medieval period this land formed part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and, like nearly all of modern day Belarus and parts of Ukraine, it was ruled by powerful noble families which recognised the suzerainty of the Catholic Grand Duke in Vilnius but remained Orthodox themselves. The chapel in Kodeń was founded by one such noble – Paweł Sapieha who was Orthodox but attended the medieval University in Kraków, had a western-style coat of arms (with fox  in it!), considered himself a knight and was keen to invite Western artists, builders and craftsmen, to work in his extensive eastern possessions.

Magnate families like his were pillars of Lithuanian influence in the East. The Orthodox lords of Lithuania followed ancient traditions of Russian princes but refused to accept the dominant position of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. For nearly 200 years, they embraced and financed distinct political and artistic projects that combined Gothic and Renaissance inspirations with Orthodox traditions.  Today, all that remains of their hybrid, Latin and Orthodox culture are a few palaces and late medieval chapels, nearly all of which are preserved in Belarus. All but the one in Kodeń which survives  so that Poland too, can remember the heritage of its Orthodox allies.

This reminds me of the Hawa Mahal (Wind Palace) in Jaipur, India - not that I've been to Jaipur, but I've seen lots of photos.

Wow, I just checked Hawa Mahal online and I think your comparison is very flattering to Kodeń! The palace in Hawa Mahal looks just stunning and Kodeń, well, is just a bit smaller Thank you very much, both for the comparison and for taking the time to view this image and comment - I really apprecite it! Thank you again and all the best from Warsaw!

I am glad you think so, few foreign tourists visit this remote part of Poland, so I am particularly happy that you noticed this, thank you very much!

As always, very interesting. I've also seen at least one thoroughly Gothic Orthodox church in Saint-Petersburg, although I think it dates to a later period, when the Russian nobles saw the Russian traditions as extremely backwards and started inviting Italian architects to build palaces and churches for them.

I had no idea you have been to St Petersburg! Wow, I envy you your trip, I would love to visit that part of the world, particularly the Vieliki Novgorod and the medieval, Byzantine-Rus churches there.... Yes, you are quite right, there are some great, neo-gothic structures in Russia and in a sense, they might look similar to the much older, Gothic architecture of Belarus and Lithuania... thank you very much for taking the time to view this and comment - it is a pleasure to hear from you and I am sorry for taking so long to reply! All the best from Warsaw!

Yep, I've been to Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, although the trip was pretty short - it lasted just a week. I don't have many pictures from Saint-Petersburg, as the weather was pretty awful, but there's a couple of pictures from the Moscow Kremlin in my gallery! There's at least one brick Gothic tower in the Kremlin, built around the early Renaissance. Again, I don't have a picture of it, but here's one from the official website: link

I am very glad you find this history interesting - thank you for taking the time to comment! It is just a subjective opinion, but I really like history of frontier regions - places where different cultures and ideas mix. Of course, this creates tensions, conflicts and sometimes, great destruction - but it can also be very potent and creative! Anyway, thank you very much once again for stopping by - I appreciate it! All the best from Warsaw!

Yes, you are quite right! I am glad you made the connection between these two churches! Of course, St Anne is much more beautiful as it was built in Lithuania's capital but you are very right both St Anne in Vilnius and the chapel in Kodeń are products of the same time and the same artistic circles! Thank you very much for the wonderul and insightful comment - it is a pleasure to hear from you! All the best from Warsaw (when we have the first spring storm right now, with rain and thunders...).

Beautiful structure. And I just love how bright the colours are in this shot and the shadow of the tree on the red brick of the church! Very nice shot! A shame there is so little of the architecture of the Lithuanian dukes preserved.

Hi Akitku! I am so sorry for missing your comment and not responding to it earlier! I am always so glad to see a comment from you I have no idea how I might have missed that one! I am very glad you took the time to view this image - perhaps it is not as impressive as some stunning, crusader sites in the Levant or monumentl abbeys in the West, but I think the heritage of Eastern / Central Europe also has its own charms and I am always particularly glad when people appreciate it - thank you again and all the best!

Fascinating to know a little more of the history of this area. The chapel looks in excellent condition - that's great.
I'm curious - what's the small separate building in a similar colour on the left?

BricksandStones In reply to ahappierlife [2018-04-22 19:13:08 +0000 UTC]

I am very glad you stopped by and took the time to comment on this, this part of Poland has very few medieval monuments left and this is why the few that do survive seem particularly worthy of attention to me. I never managed to visit Belarus (getting Visa is fairly expensive and complicated) but I hope that one day I will get to visit some sites similar to Kodeń.... About its good condition, the chapel was in ruins (its vault collapsed in the early 20th C.) but the facade is original and was restored relatively recently - it is a Catholic chapel now. About the building to the left - the park around the chapel is owned by the nearby monastery and this is one of the Stations of the Cross used when processions are held around the church. It is very modern, I think it cannot be older than 20 years.... The border with Belarus is right behind that building, the border signs are 100 meters away... Thank you again, for the comment, it seems that few people like this image so I am especially glad that at least you got interested Thank you!

It's a real joy - interesting about the stations of the Cross. I had a Catholic friend for many years and she said how helpful they were - a kind of call to humble appreciation for the Redeemer's suffering for us.
