Description 15x22 Strathmore wet media board + Daniel Smith watercolor

Was going for a sort of Venetian carnival pimp coat serial killer kind of look while also paying homage to his recently severed face.

Anyway for anyone trying to learn watercolor technique, this was sort of an experiment in using the different mediums available. Try diluting the water for you background with Ox Gall (it's exactly what it sounds like unfortunately and will make your painting smell like McDonalds) to extend your drying time. It let's you pull off some really cool techniques and go back in and fine tune and seamlessly connect large washes.

I also experimented with adding Gum Arabic to my water for the texture on his coat. It makes the color much more vibrant while also allowing you to further pull out the color with clean water. If you oversaturate your water with the Gum Arabic and apply clean water to a wet color wash you can get these hard edged textural details that work really well for representing stiff and glossy fabrics. c:

No but this is amazing and god the saturation is stunning! I love the nice mesh of vibrancy and decay, it works so well for Joker.

That background's wiillld. Was not expecting that when I pulled it up rofl, but it's very interesting--how did you even do that? I love all of the different textures you got in his costuming, they're wonderful, and his carved knives are the just the best of all accessories. This Joker's a fly motherfucker.

Amazing work! At first glance I haven't thought it to be watercolours, very saturated tones indeed. Love how shining the green jacket turned out!
