Is that an eye on his hip?

I THINK so, or at least that's how I interpreted it. Pictures aren't terribly clear, nor is the episode itself outside of one brief closeup shot when he first appears (but I watched a rip of a VHS recording from when it aired on TNT, so not great quality), but yeah.

Looks really cool. Such a shame this character is so off limits in Japan. I really thought his look was amazing. It was down to earth and more grounded.

It's really strange though, that stuff like this is not ok, but yet you have the Mysterians that is hailed as a great piece of Science Fiction cinema. It is sort of the same story. An alien race is playing around with nuclear energy and it backfires on them. They have the same burns, and theΒ  thematic story that is associated with them, is the same haunting tale as the Spell Aliens.

Really, the only difference is the Mysterians want to mate with our women....which amounts to freaking rape. And the Spell need to feed on the blood of humans in order to combat their poisoning. Though child's blood is more pure and not tainted with "stuff".

Idk. When you look at them like that.....rape vs killing people and kids....doesn't it amount to the same sort of despicable atrocities? They are both evil as freaking sin....

Β I just find it a bit weird ya know.

I do feel weird about how drawn to Spell's design I am, how much I like it, knowing that those burns are the primary reason the episode was banned and understanding the controversy. The rest of his design is so great too, I see a lot of people comment on how unremarkable it is, but I think he heavily resembles an illustration out of those old books on alien encounters and UFO sightings from around the same time period.

I saw the Mysterians for the first time last year and...it didn't leave much of an impression. I don't recall them showing the burns, or at least emphasizing them the way they do with Spell in Ultraseven (which has that closeup of that strange, glowing growth on his hip), so that may be part of the reason it wasn't seen as controversial? I guess Japanese standards for censorship are just as strange as they are here in the US, just with a focus on different things. Like, I was shocked when Ultraseven decapitated Eleking and blood poured out, and one of the early episodes of Ultraman Leo has an alien cutting a guy in half on the street in front of his two kids, who later witness the same alien cutting up a member of MAC who was supposed to be protecting them. That kind of violence wouldn't go in kid's stuff at all over here. So bizarre.
