Description This is a view looking out to the Atlantic Ocean from the second floor of the Casino Skate Palace in Asbury Park (if you ever watch The Sopranoes, you will have seen the Asbury Park boardwalk, and this building at the end of it). This is one of five prints that were in a series entitled Suburban Wasteland in the show Ex Nihilo at the Mason Gross Gallery in downtown New Brunswick, NJ.

A quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald went along with the series:

"This is a valley of ashes--
a fantastic farm
where ashes grow like wheat..."

I like the quotation.
nice colours, and I like how the see it's shown, there are many abandoned buildings in world, but rather not many of them next to ocean.

Thanks! Yes, that's true -- about being next to the ocean. Unfortunately, this building has been torn-down now, so that's one less abandoned building next to the ocean

Yo Brandon!

Good balence with this one, the clutter and mess really compliments the open spaces of sky.

One nit picking crit would be the the object on the left would look better if it was cropped off so the board continues off the edge of the photo and not drops down.

Thats about it though, great work.

Thanks -- abandoned places tend to be very "textureful."

Unfortunately, they've boarded it up really securely since I took this. They put plywood over the only first-floor entrance and then sunk two metal fence-posts flush with the wall on either side of the wood and put chain-link fence over it. They really meant business :\

The outside is still fairly interesting though.

Palace huh... I guess one could see it that way. Technically good as usual.
Where do you get all these ruins anyway?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BrandonRechten In reply to Slapo [2006-09-19 07:54:53 +0000 UTC]

I have them imported

Like I told dakoo, I usually just keep a look-out for them as I'm driving around and visit them later.

Whenever I see such pictures from you, I try to imagine all the things that have happened in these now destroyed places. Fascinating how you always manage to catch the atmosphere.

That's exactly what I try to imagine while I'm there. So much history packed into them.

Thanks

man how do u find such place ??? .. GUESS i will trying some too...
I also like how subtly ur HDRs r done... ANY tip for me ....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BrandonRechten In reply to dakoo [2006-09-19 05:36:18 +0000 UTC]

I mostly just keep my eyes out while I'm driving around. Sometimes I research places online. But all the places I've taken shots in so far are just from passing them on the road and deciding to visit later.

As far as the HDRs are concerned...I guess it's mostly just choosing the right exposures to combine and a lot of trial and error. I wish there was a very specific way I went about doing it so I could share it, but there really isn't. I just mess around combining various exposures and playing with the intensity until it looks how I want it to.
