depending on the software you can take a volume light and skew/stretch it to look like an asteroid, worked nicely for me using bryce

Sorry thats the only post proccessing i know! This terrain was orginally going to be a learning terrain for your kind of manipulation ([link] ) I want to learn how to put those tree textures in, but I think it was to bumpy to do much of that. So thats what I came up with!

The image is nice, well done, and really gives of the feeling that you are either on another planet, watching as an astroid falls down towards the planet, or on Earth in some remote location watching. The feeling of depth is also apparent with the slight haze look on the mountains in the distance, and then the total blur look on the clouds even further then that just add to the effect. The winding river is like a story in itself, just waiting to be adventured on, but no one is there to travel it.
The astorid is nice, but the tail ... just looks a little solid, as if it were not just a tail, but an accual part of the astroid itself. It has this bold feel to it, and seems to be standing apart from the astorid to be a part of it. That is the one thing I did not really care for. Yes, you said it was the hardest part, with good reason. Tails are not the easiest things to pull off. I know, Ihave yet to do that. It is just something to play around with.
I like the colors that are choosen as well, but I personally feel that making it slightly brighter would add more to it. It is so dark and grim that it seems as if we are watching the end of a life. A few more "brighter" colors would have worked as well, but that might just remove from the image that is already set before me. I am just giving out what I feel.
I really do like it, especially for a first time. It shows that you are willing to try new things. Keep up the good work.

Shiney!
The only beef I have that was not pointed out would be that the atmosphere looks like it is in layers, instead of a nice gradient. Then again, I am unsure that you can actually do that with the program you use.
Excellent work. ^-^

You are right, i noticed this problem in photoshop, Terragen sometimes does that, and when i do my post proccessing it only brings those out more! thank you for pointing it out. I tried to get rid of them in photoshop but couldnt seem to get it to look right.

Yea it was pretty fast, I Started the render last night and it was finished by morning. I spent around two hours on the post work. (the planet was made earlier)

thanks, I wish I could add some more color to the peice, but for some reaoxn i can never get it to look good in terragen! And you are right, I do need to work on those asteroids! maybe thatll be my goal for the next peice?

would be a nice goal for a next work^^ but why want you to add more color, I love the colros how they are. But maybe try to add it in ps by overbrushing with another color and change the layermode to soft light!

Looks nice mate, especially for a fast one. The terragen is really sweet and the subtle stuff happening in space is nice as well.... Maybe a bit too subtle though, I think I'd like to see some more stuff going on in there..
Keep it up
