Description Oil painting by Paul Bull (of Booth House Art Group).

He based the painting on an image that he had found in a book at work. I've looked on the net and there seems to be several versions of the same image [link] Sorry for not being able to name the original artist. I'll try to find out more.

I had a look to try and find the original of this but there are far more than several versions of this so I think a google search is going to be fruitless other than finding a site that specialises in Biblical scenes.

Other than that this is a lovely piece though I do feel it would have benefited from a little more contrast in places to add depth and shape to the subjects.

I hope my camera's not at fault there

I will have to get Paul to show me the reference in the book he said he'd used. It seems a quite stylized version (I noticed the head was at a different angle in the other images I found, but as the compositions were so alike, I believe other works have become derivative works too).

I've really had trouble with the Ruben's piece. Paul wants it submitted as an image for the brochure that Swindon Open Studios will be producing shortly ... and I'll look a right twit if it turns out to be by Brugel or someone else. I searched extensively on that one, but couldn't fond anything closely resembling the composition.

Thank you for the comment

I've also been looking for the alleged Rubin's without any luck.

It seems a vast number of Dutch and Flemmish artists painted tavern scenes, while Rubens appears to only have painted one work remotely close to the theme; it's not looking hopeful with regards to discovering the source.

Thanks for having a seach for it
