Description This picture took so much patience to get. (4 days of sitting out a few hours at a time)I had gotten close a few times, but couldn't get one in flight. It was also hard because everything had to be in manual focus. They are so fast, my camera could barely keep up with them and lock on. I also had to sit 5-6 feet away to make sure my flash was able to freeze their wings. I might be able to sit a little farther back but I only have a 200mm zoom for right now. This one isn't as perfect as I'd like it to be. I'd like it to be just a little darker, but it was getting late and the hummingbirds were heading in for the night. Although with this brightness it really brings out the colors.

My life this is insane! It must be incredibly hard to have such a ginormously high shutterspeed and still get an awesome shot like this

You need a high shutter speed otherwise the hummingbirds wings will blur because of the rapid speed they move. I wanted to do it with a higher shutter speed but my flash can't go faster 1/250

Stunning capture of the bird, exquisite color! He would be even MORE beautiful hovering against a solid background- black, or white?

Good idea! I have some different blanket/covers that I could hang on the wall. I'd wanna do light color so the shadow is still visible.

It definitely worth your efforts; I loved the frozen moment and the shadow. Wish you could get the shadow more into the frame but after all you wrote up there, I think it will be unfair to ask it from you ...
Thanks for sharing this beautiful moment,
Hakan

I will try this because I still wanna try again because this exposure is just a little too bright for my tastes. I actually didn't even think about a shadow being there till I saw it. lol
