Holy shit why haven't I seen this before. This is so sick my brain is barfing...

I know you probably hate to hear this.. but this has to be my favourite of all your work to date. The brush/stroke economy, the suggestion of form and the sense of lighting and time of day is just fabulous. (gotta love that bounce light on the bottom of the trilobyte shaped freighter to the top right, really helps give it a sense of distance and volume.. and that moonlight just trying so hard to bleed through that smog! oh!)

To top it all off, a perfectly chosen worm's eye shot. We really do feel tiny and so mortal when looking up and the drizzle and the polluted sky, almost like we're worshiping the immortal monolithic structures that tower above us, and the capitalist gods that rule this dystopian cyberpunk future.

Peter Molyneux or EA needs to slap the SYNDICATE logo on this and use it as key art. I would buy the game in a heartbeat.

and lastly.. PAINTER?1 WHAT THE FUCK?!111111111

Yah, using Painter from time to time...it DOES have some delicious brushes. But I'm still a Photoshop-fanatic till I die, promise!

And thanks a lot man, very flattering hearing this from you. And yeah, I wish I had more time to invest in stuff like this...as it is, I'm feeling pretty locked in my style because I'm so swamped in work that I can't really afford to experiment too much, which in turn means I'm churning out images where I'm spending too much time on them...blah, it's a vicious cycle, and one I'm hoping to get out of soon.

As you say, economy of strokes...it's something I really really want to get better at. I got a tendency to overwork images so much that I end up spending way too long doing them, and not really improving them enough to warrant the extra time spent. Guess it's a confidence thing more than anything...bold strokes are dangerous things.

Upon clicking this open, I actually, literally said, out load in a breathtaken fashion, "whoa!" This is not compliment or exaggeration. Merely a factual relation of my immediate reaction to this image, which I thought you might be pleased to be aware of. Take it as you will.

The compliment is; Damn, like everyone else has already said, "20 minutes?" That's a little bit more than impressive. That's "to the limit!"
I knew Painter wasn't worthless. Someone was arguing the point with me recently.

Lol, thanks alot!
Only just starting to grasp Painter myself...been a devoted Photoshop user for most of my painting carreer. But I must say it is pretty incredible what you can do with it. Once I get a firmer grasp on the brushes I think I'm gonna switch to use that fulltime.

Obviously, if you use fog, you must be covering for rendering errors, like all pictures. You need to stop copping out and put some effort into it.

//pay no mind, this looks great
//has been trying to get the inverse angle on an unrelated piece for two weeks now.

20 Minutes of painting?? Thats great! Very low detail, BUT.... Amazing atmosphere and mood!! And if you look at the full view from a distance from the monitor.. it looks very realistic even!

pretty sweet, seriously only 20 minutes? does that include planning or was this just developed as you went along.

BluntieDK In reply to botchiball [2006-02-16 16:01:10 +0000 UTC]

Blecch, there was no planning for this. It was one of those "Hmm, I'll put osmething here, and something here, and oooh, a blimp there, yeah, this works!"-kinda things...
