your last 5 renders all have a tribal\totem groove goin' on

re: your new machine

I assume you have multi-threading (8 threads) and 64 bit renderer turned on? .. because your speed up is not really showing it .. should be faster

and ... damnit, I told technology to take a breather after I got mine .. seems I'm gonna have to speak louder next time

I figure by August my computer will be old hat.

As for rendering Keith I am using 64 bit but I'm not sure
how I use multi-threading(8 threads) I'd be more than
happy to get your input on that.
As for the tribal/totem groove, your right I have noticed that
myself. It's not intentional, but I believe it's because I have used
the same basic parameter to start the fractal then work on abusing
it till I'm happy with what I create.

multi-threading = options (ctrl-p) General Tab - Top left corner

assuming you have a quad-core-hyperthreaded CPU, you can have 8 simultaneous threads (8 cores)

to see this .. open your TASK MANAGER and look at the performance tab = 8 little cpu windows (task mgr = right-click on your task bar)

while rendering this way your CPU's will be PEGGED, and if you're doing other things, they will have to wait to grab a spare cycle (pausing your render for a few seconds can help this) .. (remember to un-pause)

you CAN tell your PC to only use a set# of cores by going to the processes TAB of TASK MGR, selecting APO in the list, right-clicking and choose SET-AFFINITY and turning off cores for that process

BUT .. I've never actually done that, myself

So far so good. Need to learn Windows7 better.
Need to get a better grip on how Libraries work.

I'm a little confused....why can't you use Apophysis??

Lincava In reply to bluesman219 [2010-03-27 14:36:11 +0000 UTC]

It's bombing out on me. Ever since I upgraded to the new Windows Office I've had problems at home. Not on my work computer - which I don't always have time to use. I only do so on my own time. So I'm thinking I've a problem with MS Office. It makes me nuts. I've reinstalled, and re-arranged my files a number of times. I've saved all to a separate drive first. Seems I can work for about five minutes, make a few changes to fractal I'm working on, and then, freeze.

Any suggestions?

There must be something weird going on with computers right now.
I installed Windowblinds on my new Desktop with Windows7 and have had
issues also. I made sure it was going to the right path and even double checked
in Impulse to make sure it installed properly. I used a default WB to start off and
it was fine so I went to Wincustomize and downloaded a few WB's and decided to
use one. The computer froze!! I restarted and it made the change and works fine.
Sometimes computers can drive you crazy. Don't know what will happen next time
I change it.
It sounds as if you've done all the right things to clear up the problem. Could a plugin
be causing an issue?? I've had that before. I finally kept all my apo. stuff in My Computer/ C/Program files
in my apophysis folder, including the programs themselves. If I had a shortcut on my desktop
for Apo. it didn't work right.
Let me know if that might help or if I'm just spinning my wheels.

I'll try it, Phil. Sooner or later I'm going to nail it down. But I think putting everything into one folder is something I had already tried. However, I have sub-folders for various versions. You open Apo by going directly to the .exe file?

Lin

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bluesman219 In reply to Lincava [2010-03-28 23:19:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I have 4 versions of Apo. in my Apophysis 2.2 folder in program files.
I had been having problems using plugins when the .exe was was on my DT as a shortcut.
I read somewhere that by having your Apo. in your folder with your plugins
it would end that issue. Once I did that I really didn't have problems except when I had a
plugin in the folder that was already in the program. So I deleted the doubles I had.

I don''t know if this is your problem but it cured mine. Hope you figure it out. I know
it drove me crazy for awhile. Apo. is one of my ways of getting away from the real world.

Very hot Phil! I like!

I need a new PC too dammit! I keep "configuring" on the Dell site.

bluesman219 In reply to parrotdolphin [2010-03-27 03:12:59 +0000 UTC]

I did that for a long time myself.
After asking for approval from my beautiful wife I
actually went to Dell and ordered the computer the
way I wanted it. XPS Studio with 1 Terabyte of hard drive/12 gigs memory/Nvidia video card(1 gig)
I had to special order the video card. They offer ATI cards and I had trouble with them.
I didn't want another one.
Man is it easy to spend money!!

Once you start configuring, it's pretty much all over - you know you're gonna get one. Happens to me every time. Your's sounds sweet! Mine's on the way (they dun me in with a 40% off coupon) but it's not quite as uber as yours. Have fun with it - and tell me it's fast as f*** please.

IT'S FAST AS FUCK!!!

I could have used a 40% off coupon badly!!
I went with the XPS Studio Series.
When I pulled it out of the box I about passed out!!
This thing is a monster!! Makes my old Sony Vaio look like a toy.
I'm sure you got yourself a great computer. Tell me what you got!!

I love fast as fuck! I need fast as fuck.
It came today and I wasn't home (wah!), but I'm gonna wait tomorrow til I get it. Here's the goods:
Studio XPS 9000, Intel Core i7-960 processor (8MB L3 Cache, 3.2GHz)
8GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz
Dell Wireless Desktop Keyboardand Mouse
24.0" Dell U2410 UltraSharp Full HD Monitor, 24.0" viewable image size
etc, etc, yada, yada, yada...
all for a mere 1500 bucks (plus tax and shipping, so really 1600)

I just hope I don't pass out.

Sound great Janet!!
I have the wireless also.
I got the intel 4 core processor.
I really like Logitech equipment.
I already have a Razr wireless keyboard
and I recently got the new Logitech wireless
mouse with all kinds of bells and whistles!!
Isn't electronic fun!!?? and expensive!!
Mine was about the same price without the monitor.
What shocked me was the size of the tower. Shit, it
makes my old Sony look like a toy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

parrotdolphin In reply to bluesman219 [2010-04-03 03:19:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's a huge tower. My old one was pretty big too, but not that big. It's fun and fast as you darn well know what!

It's some adjustment getting used to Win7 - I was on XP. I think I've turned off about 50 annoying things so far.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bluesman219 In reply to parrotdolphin [2010-04-03 05:45:39 +0000 UTC]

What kind of "things" did you turn off??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

parrotdolphin In reply to bluesman219 [2010-04-03 17:54:03 +0000 UTC]

UAC and that totally annoying dock thing - oh, that's only 2. There were some other things I changed setting for in the windows explorer. Maybe I exaggerated a wee bit?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bluesman219 In reply to parrotdolphin [2010-04-04 02:54:38 +0000 UTC]

We all do that!!
What is UAC??
That dock thing is something I've had for years. from Wincustomize.
As a matter of fact Stardock Corp. owns Wincustomize and the
taskbar, dock, and how the programs open and close are graphics made by
Stardock in conjunction with Microsoft.

I was amazed at how much of the graphic designs were programs I have
been messing with for several yrs. on XP and incorporated into
Windows7.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

parrotdolphin In reply to bluesman219 [2010-04-04 04:48:45 +0000 UTC]

UAC = User Account Control - It's mission is to drive all windows users insane so Microsoft can take over the world... or, um, maybe they've already done that?

There are definitely some cool things about Win7 - as soon as I get used to it, I'm sure I'll like it just fine.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bluesman219 In reply to parrotdolphin [2010-04-06 03:30:33 +0000 UTC]

Ok, question Janet...can I change the way my "All Programs"
open. right now it's just a list within the start menu that scrolls.
I would prefer having it more like XP where it opens up and shows all programs.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

parrotdolphin In reply to bluesman219 [2010-04-06 04:09:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't see any way of doing that. I don't mind it though, and you can just click START, enter a letter or 2 and it pops right up with those programs that start with the letter(s) you typed. I think it's a lot better than XP was.

Someone at work sent me this today [link]
although, I haven't really looked through it yet. Might be good

there might be options.
Thanks for the link Janet. I'll look into it.
