In my opinion, the creators should surprise us by keeping Mako with Asami (Biker chick), and sticking Bolin/Korra together (even though I feel they'll do the opposite, inevitably)

The current path delivers a bad message.
1) If you keep it cool and have the looks, you "get" the girl (Male perspective)
2) Even if you get along much better with the less attractive guy, go with the "hotty" anyway (Female perspective)

And this has been repeated in the Avatar series since the beginning... Take Jet from the original series, and even Zuko.

Now, keeping Mako with Asami says: you dont have to be wealthy with a fancy car to find someone who likes you... Etc etc!
And it's not like there's something wrong with Asami. Very supportive character and doesn't want Mako for superficial reasons (obviously). Doesn't give him the business for spending so much time with Korra, and is the only reason they were even able to participate in the pro-bending matches. [shrug]

In short, Good message > Bad message.
Always good to drift away from tradition because tradition ensures that a very small percentage of people win and keep winning. But I guess that's what natural selection is XD
