Well-said! You are totally right. None of those princesses had an "easy" life. XD Snow White was about to get murdered, then she WAS murdered and FINALLY she lived happily ever after. Cinderella was just servant in her own house, she had no parents and a miserable life. You get the point? The real message of the Disney Princesses is that no matter how difficult your life may seem, you should never surrender and always be optimistic.

i absolutely love this. and you are majorly correct. the princesses are strong, independent women who teach us about finding our way and gettting our feet on the ground and being able to find a man in the process. (except for of course snow white, not the smartest cookie in the jar)
thank you so much for posting this.

exactly! I'm tired of all the crap the princesses get, just because of pre-conceived stereotypes they put upon them, ya know?

Fair enough, most people don't.
I don't have a problem with the princesses themselves, it's the "Disney Princess" brand itself that bugs the hell out of me. Basically, Disney's taken these strong, feminine, self-confident, charming young women, sucked all the personality and every ounce of body fat (except perhaps their boobs) out of them, stuck them in over-elaborate bejewelled gowns that probably weigh several tonnes, and plastered them all over Barbie pink products with vapid smiles on their faces. That bothers me. Have you seen the "Disney Princess" Cinderella? She is quite literally ribcage, spine, then miles of floofy skirt. She was NEVER that disgustingly anorexic-looking in the movie. But that's what they're selling the little girls. And Mulan, whenever she pops up, is always - ALWAYS - wearing the pretty dress and facepaint from the Matchmaker sequence - you know, the stuff she rebelled against since it wasn't "her"?
*ahem* Well, that's enough ranting from me. But yeah. The princesses themselves are pretty badass, but the Disney Princess brand? Pfft.

Yes, but remember, Disney has to compete with Bratz (Hoez/Bitchez) and Barbi, and they need to make the princesses marketable and something parents and more importantly, the kids themselves would pick up. And just hope the message gets through that they're trying to teach gets through.
as for weight, well, they are artistic drawings, ya know? and personally, I never thought about the weight issue ever when I watch/ed. I think that girls with such issues might pick it up from their moms or pushed by society (asshole boyfriends, husbands, etc). They see mom fretting about her weight, so then the kid thinks about it.
However my mom didn't (but then she also looks really pretty anyways) so I never picked up on it. (though meh parents got divorced when I was young and as I said, so she wasn't around much for me to pick up on much anything really...
I think the Princesses and Kim Possible are better role-models (as characters/in the movies themselves) then shallow Barbi or sex slave Bratz.
Buuut perhaps I shouldn't rant so much either. However, I can't seem to shut up about things at times. (I like intelligent discussion long as it doesn't turn into one of those screaming matches)

I don't think the Princess brand is as much about the message as it is about the marketing, but you've got a point. It is hard to be competetive in an overly-sexualized market.
Do you remember when Barbie was cool? She was an astronaut, a physicist, an Olympic gymnast...Now the only thing she's allowed to be is pretty. And occasionally a fairy or a mermaid. I don't think this is happening by accident. Girls aren't as empowered anymore. (And Bratz are freaky-lookin'. Have you ever seen a woman with a head like that? And you know what they say about guys with big feet; does it apply to dolls as well?)
Disney's female characters are definitely good role models, I'd say. (Except maybe Snow White. Don't take candy from strangers!) But have you seen the "Princess Tales" or the sequels that get knocked off quickly to turn a profit? Disney's in it for the money just as much as they are for love, and if they can make that money by de-personalitizing and disempowering their princesses, so be it. (Cinderella 2 actually made me want to stab out my eyes. And what's up with turning Tinkerbell from a little bitch into a loveable ball of glitter?)
I rant too much too. Shall we agree to avoid turning this into a screaming match?

Damn straight! People who aren't themselves are just afraid of who they are, and are uncomfortable with themselves, be it their body, hobbies, etc. There is someone for everybody in the world. ((lol I almost typed worlf...)) Like Starship sings... "It's not over 'til it's over!"

I hate Disney for ripping off Kimba the White Lion. The Lion King, pffft my ass. But I don't dislike them for the princesses.
If anything, I don't really care much for the princesses. Call me a tomboy if you will, but that's just me.
