Description Ahoy!

I've actually had this started for a long while- originally it was gonna be my entry for the Good vs Evil contest involved with Wacom way back when. Never really got around to finishing it 'til now~

Short n sweet- a random sort of... flowerman of sorts getting himself ready to battle with a ravenous centipede-like creature!

I feel... oddly proud of this- The coloring was majority Corel Painter X (except for the motion blur- that was Photoshop 7.0).

But, I feel good for the fact that I used only colors* for pretty much all the picture, save for some shadow touch-ups.

**Normally I retain to my multiply layer addiction.

If anything (at least for the moment) I'm happy with how it turned out!

You can see the detail of the grassman here! >>> [link]

Pic Info
- Photoshop 7.0 (sketch, flat colors & motion blur)
- Corel Painter X (painting painting painting- with mostly wet gouache)
- Tablet
- Roughly... at least 7 hours for the painting part alone- probably 25min or less on the sketch.
- Size: about 44% original size.

Please DO NO copy, trace, recolor, redistribute, etc. for any reason.

First off, this is actually my first try of writing a critique (using this feature) so please don't hit me or something.. xD
Especially these rating categories seem rather confusing to me... o o;

So well... let's get it started.
My first victim will be this little nice grass man. The first thing that comes to my mind when I see him is that you've done a really great job on his design. It's very detailed, unique and yet easy to recognizethat it's meant to be a grass creature.
Talking about the details, I think you did a great job on the grass- and leaf- like clothes. I also took a look at the close-up picture of him and I'm always badly amazed of how such hard strokes (I don't know how to name it any better) can give a picture such a smooth and realistic view.
His expression and pose also fit the whole scene very well.

Coming to this giant insect, it's also very well drawn and the shadings just as the design itself make it look very realistic. I'm really caught by the job you did on shading the legs that are closest to the viewer just as the closest parts of the shell.

Finally, I'll get to the picture as a whole.
The grassy background gives the whole scene a very nice touch, almost like a kind of cage or dead end.
Furthermore, you did a great job on the size relation between the grass man and the insect. As humans we always see those insects as small and helpless creatures, but this point of view you chose makes the viewer almost as small as the grass man himself and shows him how terrifying such an animal can be as soon as you are a little smaller.

All in all I can just say, you did a very great job on this and it's damn worth viewing. Keep it up! :3

Aim for the thorax! Aim for the THOR-AXXX!

Good job having the centipede's thora--body encompass part of the perimeter of the piece, establishing his commanding and intimidating precence as the "monster". The grass forms a nice corner for the diminuative "slayer" who stands resolutely.

Recreated a classic scenario here

What is it with you and the interesting concepts? <.<;

Odd that there would be a mysterious patch of land with no grass...but the dude's gotta stand somewhere. XD Obviously he'll kick the bug's ass using crazy kung fu moves and possibly a river where he'd drown the beast.

Another great piece. Though I think since its sort of a magnification of the world; seeing something so close up, the elements of the piece should be more refined and detailed in relation to each other.

But that could be due to the colouring style, so I dunno. Keep it up! You never fail to take us on some fascinating adventure.
