The news that Janati had been accepted to meet with the fine stallion Kiriel was enough to excite the entire staff. Janati had been a farm favorite, and had weathered many changes, being one of the few to stay at the Chronicles after the mass purging of all the race horses. She was a crowd pleaser, a dedicated broodmare, and an honest competitor. She was also recognized by other stables, even if she wasn’t yet recognized as finest in the Arabian association.

She was scheduled to breed in spring. The snow had melted, but the chill left an icy hard earth under them. Many horses would only be allowed in small paddocks to avoid them from slipping; Janati was one of those horses. She had been padded down and vet checked almost excessively over the winter. As the mares were finally coming into season, Janati was placed on surveillance watch to assure she was ready for her next breeding. Melody was making her rounds, leading one of that farm’s Sveta’s down the mare corridor. She peeked into the paddock as she passed where Janati had been placed, and noticed something missing. Alarmed, she tied the Sveta to a halter ring and briskly jogged towards the paddock. Janati had pressed herself against the far corner, heaving, laying on her side. Melody felt the panic burn in the throat as she rushed to the mare’s side and pulled out her phone to send an SOS text to Maverrick. She checked for blood or a break, thinking the mare had slipped, but not a drop was found, and the mare did not pull back in pain. She looked at Janati’s face, the mare oozed mucus from her nostrils, and her eyes were beginning to crust. Her body was hot to the touch. Christabelle came running with Dr. Steele, and pulled Melody away from the mare…

Janati had to almost be dragged to the quarantine barn in the far East corner of the farm’s property. There she had been placed in her own box, where she listlessly leaned against the wall. Melody looked at the mare, a heavy feeling at the pit of her stomach.
Maverrick emerged from the barn’s small clinic and touched Melody on the shoulder, “it’s influenza. She should pull through with warmth and some good medicine.”
They were all able to sigh a little bit of relief.
“But this means she’ll be unable to breed this year. We won’t be able to send her to another farm for at least another few months,” he said, then turned to return to the office.

Night had fallen, and there was a quiet type of feeling looming around the barn, as though the horses knew there was one missing. Melody lay next to a crackling fire place, half consciously reading a book. Her cell phone sent off a sudden vibration, followed by its ring, startling her out of a daze. She looked at the screen, unable to recognize the number. Cautiously she answered, “hello?”
For a spilt second there was no answered, followed by a very soft, “hi Melody.”
She swallowed hard, her eyes widening, “Richard?”

Comments: That title is pretty literal. Finally. FINALLY I have this breeding picture done.
Thank you so much for being so incredibly patient. I probably didn’t deserve it. ._.

But yes, Richard! After 6 months virtual stable time he has finally called! What could this mean??
