This isn't adult versions of Yugi and Anzu. They are Yugi's parents, Yoshino andd Kyone. I figured Sugoroku (Grandpa Mutou) was still the legendary gambler when Yoshino was growing up. This gave me the impression that Yoshino was probably one of those bad boy types though one of honor. I also thought, "Why didn't Yoshino solve the puzzle since his father would have had it with him?" "Why did it wait for Yugi?" "Who's to say the puzzle wasn't solved before?" You know the old saying "If a tree falls in the forest and no one gets hear about, does it make a thud?" Thus this little idea sprang to mind.
Yoshino, the son of a notorious underworld gambler, goes to an elistist school where he meets Kyone, an heiress to a powerful and rich family. He solves the puzzle because he is a gaming genius and meets the spirit of the puzzle who becomes known as the Other Yoshino. The Other Yoshino is very serious and doesn't know how to play games without treating it like its life or death. No clue how to have fun at all. Yoshino is the exact opposite, he doesn't take anything seriously no matter how dangerous it is.
Kyone, Yoshino and the Other Yoshino become inseparatable. Yoshino never tells his father about solving the puzzle and hides it from him. Thinks his father will just try to gamble with it some more. After Yoshino and Kyone graduate from High School they enter a crisis. Kyone's parents want to marry her off to none other than Gozaro, a man with no money but grand visions. Her family believes he will lead their company to greatness and want him to join their family. Kyone refuses and a fight breaks out between Kyone's cousin, a man who protects the interests of the family, and Yoshino. They participate is a shadow game that her cousin loses and the penatly game drives him insane.
Kyone escapes with Yoshino and ultimately turns her back on her family. At this time Yoshino realizes he needs to help his other self return to where he belongs but doesn't know how to help. Kyone and Yoshino then begin traveling to try to find clues to help the Other Yoshino return to the afterlife. Their journey leads them to Egypt where they run into Pegasus, before he got his Millenium Eye.
They travel together a brief time before Kyone realized she is pregnant (with Yugi of course). Yoshino starts acting like a mother hen, which amuses Kyone and Pegasus, and worries the traveling might harm Kyone and their child. The Other Yoshino claims that since he has waited millenia already a few more years won't hurt. So they say good bye to Pegasus and head back to Japan.
They debate who they should share their news with. Kyone doesn't believe she should tell her family since she abandoned them. Yoshino is uncertain of his father though he regrets not talking with his mother. Kyone and the Other Yoshino convince him to at least call his mother and tell her.
He is in the midst of a conversation with his mother whom he hasn't seen in years when a motorcycle gang shows up. Their leader is an old enemy of Yoshino's who also had his eye on Kyone. He tries to get Kyone to go with him but she refuses. He then tries to kidnap her. Yoshino hear the commotion and runs over to her. A quick fight breaks out then Yoshino and Kyone jump on his motorcycle and speed away. The gang gives chase.
The highway goes up a cliff side when the leader catches up to Yoshino and Kyone. He grabs Kyone off the motorcycle then kicks Yoshino's bike, causing it to lose control and go off the cliff. As Yoshino falls he links with puzzle and his other self for the last time summoning the Dark Magician.
The Dark Magician flies up to where Kyone is struggling with the leader and blasts him off the bike then holds the bike steady until Kyone can gain control. The leader survives the tumble but is killed by his own gang when they literally run into him. Dark Magician disappears and Kyone escapes. She appears at the bottom of the cliff with paramedics only to find Yoshino's broken body and the puzzle shattered. She gathers up the puzzle as she cries; she can't hope to put it back together and help the spirit return to the afterlife. Now she is all alone.
At the morgue the Mutous show up. Mrs. Mutou had heard the commotion over the phone because Yoshino had dropped it instead of hanging up. She and Sugoroku had gone straight over to where they had been and heard about the chase and fall. Kyone tells them about her carrying Yoshino's child and her fears of what her family may do if they find her. Sugoroku realizes his son never trusted him because of all the gambling. So he swears off gambling forever.
He uses the fortune he had gathered over the years to buy a store and become a game shop owner. Kyone goes to live with him. She quietly tucks the puzzle box in among Sugoroku's belongings as he packs. She never tells him about Yoshino solving it.
I figure since Yoshino and the Spirit were linked at the moment Yoshino died and the puzzle was shattered it caused the spirit to forget about what happened. Since Yugi never knew what happened there was nothing to remind his other self of his old partner. The puzzle was solved a generation too soon and all the people and events that were needed to help the Pharaoh return to the afterlife were not in place yet. Thus the fates had to break the bond between Yoshino and the Spirit and start again.
A cruel twist, no?
Sorry for the long description. I was very pleased with how the pic turned out, though.
