Description As some of you may know this year at my doll-making panel at Anime North I unveiled my newest doll. For those that did not get to attend here is a brief first look at him.

As you can see unlike my last doll sculpt that was extremely stylized he will be for the most part proportionally and anatomically realistic. Most dolls are stylized to some extent and after sculpting a very stylized doll I thought it would be a nice to experiment with a very realistic sculpt and also at the same time a more mature and masculine male sculpt.

He will feature double jointed arms for greater poseability, a separate upper thigh ball joint to allow him to sit cross legged, A jointed torso for added poseability and lighter weight, locking lower legs to make standing more stable, he will also feature a magnetic faceplate system allowing the swapping of different facesulpts with ease, I will also be offering expression variants for each head sculpt, example,... sleeping, sad, angry, smiling, etc.. If you happen to own one of my previous doll sculpts "while stylistically different" many of the parts will be compatible with the new sculpt, heads, hands, etc. he will be approximately 29 inches tall, (a few inches shorter than my previous sculpt) he will use 11mm eyes (possibly 12mm)

please remember he is still in the prototype stage and his upper body parts are the only ones that are 95%final, as always there will be some refinements before i make my final master molds

If you would like to see work in progress pics of my original sculptures

heres his head------>[link]

the arms------------->[link]

and his hands------>[link]

I did his original sculpt in Super Sculpey, from my original sculpture i pull silicone molds and cast in a custom resin mix, i then drill my parts hollow and string with elastic (my dolls are completely poseable) i sand down the seams then paint on the makeups.

This is amazing - it's not easy to find a little more masculine looking dolls, especially faces with more pronounced cheekbones and chins - and you do a fantastic job on it

Thank you When i first started sculpting dolls they were very androgynous but i got bored with that style so my latest sculpts have been more and more masculine. (your gallery is great BTW!)

It's always nice to see someone develope their style and not afraid to try something new. Especially if it's not following the main trend. My compliments on your work. And thanks!

I was wondering, have you made a full on doll from scratch? and if so how?

Yes, All of my dolls are made entirely from scratch... I make every part of my work except the eyes, the shoes, and the clothes (the clothes are made by a friend)

how would you suggest a first timer go about making a doll. i would dearly like to make one but i dont know how to even begin. and many of the tutorials i find are confusing.

BishonenHouse In reply to Nekochi-Kamitsuki [2010-02-22 05:47:52 +0000 UTC]

I would recommend trying to make a doll with something like super sculpey, or using a material like paperclay, or even epoxy sculpt. Id also recommend the book "YOSHIDA STYLE: Ball Jointed Doll Making Guide" its written in Japanese but the photos show the entire process of making a ball jointed doll using LaDoll clay, The techniques using polymer clay, or epoxy clay would be slightly different also similar in many ways.

I hope that helps

I've been looking at this doll for a loooong time now and trying to figure out what it is about it that makes me feel almost uncomfortable, and after a visit to your homepage and seeing more pictures I realised what it was. It looks like someone I know o.O Not only is it the shape and features of the face that is freakishly similar, but the hair is the exact same hairstyle and color as his. It is a bit creepy actually.

With that said, I want to add that I admire your work a lot. I love makeing dolls, (but for some reason none of them has ended up here on DA) and I so would like to try your technique sometime with sculpting then molding, but I doubt I'll ever be able to get my hands on the materials needed. But who knows, maby I get the chanse some day.

It's awesome I'm wondering, which kind of paint do you use for the skin? I'm trying to do a couple of dolls too, but I'm using acrylic paint and then cover it with a non-shiny barnish. But the joints glue together and the only way to fix it is to peel of the paint. Any sujestions or advice?

I'm thinking about getting into doll making myself and your dolls are simply fantastic! I'm sure it will be a while until I'm anywhere near as good as you are, but it is inspiring!

This particular doll puts me in the mind of my current celebrity obsession that is Joe Anderson from Across the Universe. Your doll is just so pretty.

Much love and admiration!

I totally understand. An artist's work is never done. It took me a while to respond back too!

He arrived on Christmas eve... of all days! It felt like I was 7 years old all over again. LOL!

This doll is amazing. He is so peaceful. This photo doesn't do him justice. The detail on his hands, feet, and facial features are amazing. I can't wait see your new work.

Much respect.

What type of armatures do you have for your poppets? Have you tried animating them stop-motion style?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BishonenHouse In reply to disscordia [2007-10-29 19:22:12 +0000 UTC]

The resin sculpture itself is the armature, all of his parts have a ball and socket type of jointing thats tightly strung together with elastic, they can also be wired internally to add stability... his faces are also swapable (similar to the sally puppet from nightmare before christmas) making facial animation also possible... Id LOVE to someday do some stop motion work with them, or sculpt something similar thats more lightweight with a better armature. I worked full time as a cg animator for about 7 years before i started sculpting dolls, It would be fun to revisit animation again. CG or stop-motion.

you did a god job on the Dancer animatic by the way

disscordia In reply to BishonenHouse [2007-10-29 21:06:13 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... 29 inches would provide some considerable challenges for a stop-mo project. For one thing there's the set construction and how much space you'd need for a stage and cameras. Plus if it was solid resin the doll would be pretty heavy. Most stop-mo puppets go from 9"-12". On the other hand you could get some fantastic detail in.

Some good resources I've found include Stop-Motion: Craft Skills for Model Animation , The Art of Stop-Motion Animation and Stop-Motion Armature Machining . The d_sim_b_shvl_img_1/102-5964954-7671349"Aardman book is also a great resource.

And of course the ever necessary stopmotoinanimation.com is invaluable for networking as well as project sharing.

(im soo behind on my DA page its silly, im really sorry its taken me this long to write back)

Yes 29 inches is a bit big for stop motion, thanks for the resources though, i already have the Aardman book, i love their work

At the moment im building a larger studio space, My current workspace is tiny, hopefully once finished ill have the extra space required for some puppet/stop motion experiments.

I absolutely love how your dolls are so unique from the other dollfie dolls out there available to people to enjoy. The facial sculpts especially I think are what help them stand out the most and even though the expressions are subtle, they're still very beautiful.

Thank you so much for continuing to share your work with us. You never cease to inspire me.
