Description Oil on canvas.

My intention with this painting was to try and depict both innocence and sensuality – hence the title. Originally it was to include broken angel wings, crushed underneath the figure, but I decided it was all looking a bit obvious (they are still there in the under painting – which is a nice thought). After I decided to lose them, I even had a few scattered feathers around for a while. In the end I was convinced that the piece was better with the only angel reference being in the title. The sheet she is laying on still has echoes of those angel wings.

I love the balance you have between "painterly" and "realism" I struggle to find a painterly style for my work...

Thanks for your encouraging comments. I've been trying to develop a more painterly style since I stopped freelance illustrating a few years ago. (Though to be honest my 'realism' was never as stunningly sophisticated as yours.) I still have a tendancy to keep going back to a painting to neaten it up until it's lost all its gestural qualities - it's a constant battle to leave in the interesting marks!

I know what you mean.

I paint using the verdaccio method where my colour goes on after the grey oils have dried and I think therefore the technique I use will always be as real as they seem to be. Although nowerdays I try to add unreal elements (painted in a real way???) to my work to try to add "art" elements.

On the other hand I've tried using colour straight out of the tube with a half painterly look - but somehow it felt like it wasn't me...

..I know we evolve as artists and when I look back at what I started painting 6 years ago I realise I've come on such a long long way - been through a few hoops too that took me nowhere exept back to where I already was!

So I think in time for me "painterly" will happen but it will happen in a natural and subconcious way - well I hope so!

I'm struggling to get the interesting marks and you struggle to leave them in - it sounds like we've both got our training mixed up! By the way my background is illustration and design too...

..have fun - I'll try and upload a few more paintings soon.

I think it's the process of trying to improve that keeps us going. I always hope that the next painting is going to be my best yet! Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

You captured the light on her right arm so well!! goncratulations on that... the idea of the wings sounds greart.. and the feathers.. but as it turned out as such I think you made a great decision.. still.. would like to see an ''angel painting'' of your eventually though

Very symbolically painted. You can almost see the heaven in the "wings" but the dark is certainly winning this round...

Thanks - you're too kind. Still trying to get to grips with this site - joined about 2 hours ago - think I'm getting the hang of it! You have a great pencil technique.
