He stared at me with confused and happy eyes.  He took his hand and lightly touched the place on his cheek where my lips touched.  It looked like he wanted to say a million different things, but every time he tried to speak nothing came out of his mouth.  I’m guessing a girl has never ever kissed him before.  Quite shocking, to me at least.

“Was that okay with you?” I asked him, just so I can get him to say something.  And also because I am slightly worried.

“Yeah,” he started “but why?”

Why? I thought to myself, is he like joking? “For everything!” I almost yelled. “All the things you have done for me since I moved here.  Right now you are the only person that believes my powers are real.  And  you are going to help me save my whole school reputation form crumbling.  I think you deserve a little thank you.”

“Oh.” he laughed shyly.

“But there’s more than that…” I said.

His eyes brightened a little, but then his eyes turned more serious and he said “we should talk about this later.  Right now we should worry about Heather.  We need to make sure she doesn’t spread the word of your secret, before it’s too late.”

He’s right. I have a reputation that is currently at high risk.  As weird as it seems, right now even he thinks that helping me is more important than a kiss he just received.  How cute is he?

“You’re right,” I tell him “but, what do we do first?”

“You should probably call her I guess.”

“But what am I supposed to say? How do I change her mind over the phone?”

“Well you wouldn’t tell her over the phone.  But maybe you could ask her if we could meet her at the park or something, and work everything out there.”

“Okay, that sounds like a good idea.” I say “Lets just hope she answers her phone.”

Luckily she does answer her phone.  So then one awkward phone call later we decide to meet at the park to work things out.  So me and Jeremiah walk to the park together.  My mind is filled with so many thoughts.  I’m worried about how heather will handle the talk.  She didn’t exactly handle how I had expected before.  I also feel bad for Jeremiah.  Always getting him trapped in the middle of my messed up life.

Neither of us had much to say to each other but luckily we were almost there.  Just steps away.  And Heather wasn’t there yet.  She better not blow us off, I thought in my head, a deal is a deal!  But luckily only a minute later I could see her coming.  Walking slowly, with this why-must-I-deal-with-these-losers face staring right at us.  Oh how bad I wanted to prove her wrong! Rip that look right off her face, and replace it with a wow-you-weren’t-kidding! Sort of face.

I stand calmly next to Jeremiah my sidekick.  I know she’s not a dangerous person or anything, but girls can be mean.

She steps toward us, “Anymore lies you want to tell me?” Heather asks profoundly.

“Nope, I’m just here to confirm the truth.” I say confidently.

Jeremiah is silent.  I told him only to butt in if I give him the “Help me!” signal.  So far so good.

“Are you listening?” I ask

“Sure, whatever.” She pretends not to care “Spill it.”

“Okay, like I said before, I can see bad luck before it happens.  Tripping, crashing, fires, that sort of stuff.  Things that just happen purely out of bad luck.”

Heather looks at my shoes, then my eyes.  Studying me.  At least I know she’s listening.

I search the park.  On the walk over I had seen a couple little bad luck incidents of people that are currently in the park.  Now I just have to find them, and show her.  I spotted him.

“Okay see,” I pointed over a distance “that little boy over there, in a second, is going to drop his strawberry  ice cream cone in the dirt.

She watches the little boy.  His curly blonde hair and his little green truck shirt. Maybe about three or four years old.  Walking along the edge of the playground like he is on a balance beam.  Licking his cold treat happily.  No care in the world, until he, like I said, drops his ice cream in the dirt.

Heather looks at me, unimpressed.  “So?  Little kids drop things all the time!  That was a lucky guess.”

“Fine,” I say “see that guy riding his bike over there?” I ask “he is about to fall off because that dog over there is going to spontaneously bolt in front of his bike.”

Heather watched carefully.  I look over at Jeremiah and he gives me a thumbs up.  And then, not at all to my surprise, exactly what I predicted happens.  I can see Heathers head spinning.

“So do you believe me now?” I ask.

“I dunno, I don’t not believe you,” she sighs “okay, I won’t tell anyone, because I don’t want them thinking I’m the crazy one.” she shakes her head.  “This is all just too weird,  I’m just going to go.  I promise I won’t tell anyone, but this doesn’t make us friends.”

She begins to walk away. “Sure,” I say “but be careful on your walk home, if you’re not paying attention you might just hurt your head.”

“Yeah, yeah, whatever…” Heather replies as she walks off.

I turn towards Jeremiah.  “Why’d you say that?”  he asks.

I make a sly face. “She might just be too overwhelmed thinking about today and run into a street sign.”

“Ouch.” Jeremiah says, then laughs

“Its not like I didn’t warn her.”

Jeremiah and I decide to enjoy the rest of the day at the park.  I sit and rock gently on the swings.  Jeremiah on the swing to my right.  Its been such a long day.

“You know before…” Jeremiah started quietly “when you kissed me?”
“Yeah.” I said, surprised he actually brought it up.  I thought I’d have to be the one to bring that one up.

“You said it was a thank you, but also more.” he says as he swings slowly, kicking his shoes in the dirt below us.

“Much more.” I say, then I let go of the chain on the swing and grab his hand.  He looks at me with his brown eyes and is about to say something.  Until he is interrupted by my ringing cell phone.  I take it out of my pocket and look at the screen.

“It’s Heather…”
