Algebra class, y=Ax squared + Bx + C… blah!  Whoever made all these random equations up must have had no friends.  Too much time on their hands.  Well I guess that I could relate because at this point the only real friend I have is Jeremiah.  He’s the best friend ever, but he’s a boy.  Right now I’m really in need of a girl friend.  Someone who I can talk about cute boys with, and share clothes and jewelry with.

I scanned my class for potential best friend candidates.  Halee?  Nah, too popular and rather stuck up if you ask me.  Zoey?  No, she’s too wrapped up in her school work all the time.  She’s one of those girls who always makes super high honors.  Not that that’s bad, but I think she has way better things to do than giggle with me about cute boys.

Hmm… I continue scanning the room.  Nope too goth, too shy, eww teachers pet!

Then my eyes scanned over Heather.  Hey, I talked to her the other day when I was waiting for Jeremiah. She seemed pretty nice.  We talked about, umm… well we talked, but I recall it being a pretty dull conversation.  But I actually think she has a lot of potential.

It was then I decided that after this class finishes I’m going to talk to her.  Maybe we can hang out this weekend, go shopping or something.

Thinking about finding a new best girl friend makes me think of my best friend back in Maine.  Her and I had so much fun together.  We were basically like sisters.  Her name was Caroline.  We always went shopping together, had sleepovers like every weekend, and movie nights on Fridays.  I remember one time when we watched this scary movie at her house Caroline and I got so scared that we couldn’t go to sleep.  So in order to tire ourselves out we played Dance Dance Revolution on her Ps2 all night.  Together we unlocked like every single song on the game!  We totally crashed the next day when we were trying to eat breakfast.  We always had a blast together.

Caroline so wished that she could move to Ohio with me but of course she couldn’t.  Her mom wouldn’t let her.

Even though we were closer than sisters, she never knew about my powers.  I always thought about telling her many times, but I figured she would get mad at me for not telling her before.  Here’s how I thought It would have gone down if I told her:

Me: “Hey Caroline, yunno I’ve never told you this before, but I have powers.”

Caroline: “powers?”

Me: “yeah, um I can see bad luck before it happens to people.  I mean not like everyone, but like people in the area yunno?”

Caroline: “Are you serious!?”

Me: “Yes…” (nervous chuckle)

Caroline: “so you’ve had these powers forever and you haven’t told me!?  We’ve known each other since second grade, I thought we told each other everything!?”

Me: “we did, I mean we do.  Just not this.”

Caroline: “but this whole time I thought we were best friends…”

Me: “But we still are best friends.”

Caroline: “obviously we’re not because best friends tell each other everything!  So do you have any other secrets, like can you fly or something!?  Actually you know what, I don’t want to know!  We can no longer be best friends!  Good bye Gina!” (storms off)

Okay that may be a bit exaggerated but I’m pretty sure that’s close to what would really happen.  Caroline could be very dramatic at times.

Jeremiah already knows, so I don’t have to worry about him.  But if I ever plan on being friends with Heather, she’s going to have to find out and hopefully not think that I’m crazy.  If she does then I either have to find a way to make her believe me, or Jeremiah is going to have to go shopping and talk about cute boys with me.

I hear the bell ring, so I grab my books and hurry up so I can start phase one of “Mission BFF Heather”.

She stops at her locker to put her books away.  I casually go up to her and smile.

“Hey Heather.”  I say

“Oh hey Gina.”  she waves back happily.  A pretty good sign.

“I was wondering, you seem really nice and I am kind of in need of some friends since I’m new here, so would you like to hang out this weekend?”

She thinks a little while she shifts around the binders in her perfectly organized locker.

“Yeah that sounds cool.”  she finally decides.

“I was thinking maybe we could go to the mall or something.” I said

“Sweet,” Heather replies “Here I’ll give you my cell number so you can call me.  I’m free all weekend so you can call whenever.”

I watch as she writes down her number in purple highlighter on this H shaped sticky note.  Then she hands it to me.

“Well I have to head to my next class.” says Heather

“Okay yeah me too, so I’ll call you tomorrow probably.”

“Sounds good Gina, see you then.” she waves as she walks away to her next class

Yes!  I thought to myself.  Phase one of “Mission BFF Heather” is complete.  Now on to phase two.
