Description November 27, 1940

"It was the middle of the night when the impact happened. The whole sub shook, throwing me out of my bunk. Shortly afterwords we heard hissing followed by the sudden silence of the electrical motors. Men scrambled from their bunks to get to their posts. I ran to along side the motors and nearly fell backwards as the stinging smell of battery acid filled my nose. Both engines were damaged, the batteries had cracked and acid was pooling on the floor of the engine room. The over head oil pipes burbled and spat boiling oil onto the two dead men that had been my shipmates in the engine room. I was reminded of the power of the acid as it had eaten away most of where ever it had landed upon their bodies. I screamed in horror at the sight and slammed the water tight door closed, locking it.
All the while the sub rocked and churned, the metal groaning, like the ship was gravely ill and on the verge of throwing up.

And then...Silence.

All at once, the power failed, and the ship went quiet and still. Save for the subtle tilting of the floor, indicating the sub was descending, and the still panicked voices of the men as the inside of the subs went dark. All the power had failed, and we were sinking out of control, it was as if a sea serpent had wrapped it's arms about the ship and was now dragging us all down to be eaten. Down where all ships go and have yet to return..."

On the night of November 27, at about 2 o'clock at night the submarine, U-104 was struck by a Dutch submarine, neither had been aware of the other. HNLMS O-22 had dove after spotting nearby German patrol aircraft and had not noticed U-104 near the surface. The conning tower of the O-22 impacted the U-104's lower hull, immediately killing the O-22. U-104 was badly damaged and suffered a total power failure, sinking to the bottom of the English channel where all hands would eventually suffocate.

Well, that's MY theory as to how both these subs were lost in the same month and area. I also had the image floating around in my head for quite some time.
