I've been wondering, when thinking of creating an image, what is you 're thinking of when making, highlight, light, base light, shadow, deep shadow and reflection? How do you keep it all straight? What method do you use to keep them all looking natural when working from imagination? Do you think in these terms? Is this just something to think about only with color? How do you find the aspects of light/color that corresponds to the base light/color? I know it's several big questions, but ones I'm working with right now.

Basically I just try and keep in mind the planes of the face or figure and what direction light and reflected light are coming from.
Works even better when drawing from life or a little reference. Even a quick piece like this I glance in the mirror if I have a question.

I'm trying to get the right colors for some comic pages that I'm working on. I keep having trouble finding the right colors for the shading and highlight. Any suggestions as to what to do there?

There really is no right colors except maybe warm in the light and cool in the shadows, but then reflected light can change that quite a bit by reflecting the local color.
Again observing real life is your best bet. I would do a lot of studies of people and objects lit in different ways and take from that for your comic work.
Make a good collection of photo ref, screen grabs of film, etc.
