Hi, I am really impressed with your art work it is fabulous. I was wondering how you made the sphere base to your lamp. Also, do you make your own air dry clay?

bgerr In reply to kimblejg [2018-02-28 16:58:11 +0000 UTC]

Hi there, thanks for your lovely comment .
As to your questions, I use a hollow styrofoam ball as a base for the lamp. The styrofoam is a transluctent, so if you apply only a thin layer of clay, the light shines through it a little. Where I have put the towers I cut out a piece of the styrofoam to let through more light. The towers are formed over carton tubes in different forms and sizes. Pringles cans work very well . I do not make my own clay. It is on my need to try list though. But I mostly use Creall do & dry. Have you ever made your own clay? How did that work for you?

Hey, thanks or getting back to me and you are welcome your work is lovely and very professional.Β  I have worked with air dry clay in the past (long time ago!) I have recently been making felting models and will try to upload my workΒ  when I have time (in-between teaching and looking after my children - a women's work is never done lol Β

Just fancied a change of medium and have been browsing for inspiration. To your question, no I have never made my own clay however I found what looks like an excellent recipe seeΒ

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph4cJS… Β  -Β  if you look on his web site he produces some large scale work that appears to be very sturdy and weatherproof I believe. (Not my style but hey each to their own!) Β

Could you advise me where you purchase the Styrofoam balls?Β  I would like to work on a similar project for my daughter she has a Birthday coming up and is a huge fan of 'Night before Christmas by Tim Burton'Β  Thanks again for advice and keep up the good work (excellent work! best regards Kimberlie

Oh, I'm so sorry for my late reply - have very much been tied up at work lately. Thanks for the link - I'll check it out. I'd like to try it sometime, but for now the clay I use is cheap and works very well for me.

As to the styrofoam balls, any craft shop, at least here in The Netherlands can provide them. I also sometimes get them at our local garden center in the the flower arrangement section. Good luck!!

If you are still sharing notes, I would love to see/read how these are made! Also, do you have an Etsy where they can be purchased?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bgerr In reply to SprayGirl43 [2016-04-12 06:58:44 +0000 UTC]

Sure, no problem! I have saved the text so I can send to whomever likes to try their hand on a lamp. It is only a text based instructtions. So if you run into questions you can always contact me for more information or a picture to explain. I just sent you a note.

I am contemplating setting up shop on Etsy. But for now I kind of have my hands full on my job and my kids and just haven't got round to it yet. But I might sometime in the near future. Hopefully

pandora0ARTS [2014-12-14 15:52:28 +0000 UTC]

Ah this is inspiring. What materials did you use? Just paperclay? I somehow would be scared that it would end up catching fire.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bgerr In reply to pandora0ARTS [2014-12-15 09:55:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I use several materials: the base is a styrofoam hollow ball and the base of the towers are toilet paper rolls. Then all is covered in a air drying clay, which is basically a mixture of cellulose, woodlglue, salts and some additives. And yes, this could catch fire when it gets too hot. Therefore I only use LED-lights and a prefixed cord and fitting. LED doesn't get warm. Anything else would melt the styrofoam...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pandora0ARTS In reply to bgerr [2014-12-15 12:25:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I wouldn't even have thought that the styrofoam would let the light through that well. Thanks for your reply! I need to try out something like that in the near future. Why buy boring lamps if you can make such individual pieces

thanks!Β

bgerr In reply to harviedo [2014-06-06 17:37:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! This one took me quite a lot of time, but that has to with all the tiny details this lamp has. I think this one took 40 to 50 hours to complete. You can make a smaller more basic version in a lot less time though. The first one I made I did in a weekendworkshop, which took about 10 hours.

I have absolutely no problem sharing the tools of the trade - I'll send you a note with a basic how to.
