Description FINALLY!
My half art trade I had with of one of his pillow girls. At first I was GOING to draw him a picture, but after he thought that THIS IMAGE was my art trade half, I decided to do something a little different.
I would like to ship this to him... but I'm a little afraid of not packaging it good enough. xD;;;
**EDIT: I shipped it off and it successfully made it to him! YAAAAAY!!! **

This maquette took a while to make. xD;;; This is my second attempt sculpting one. After making it, I probably need to change some of my strategy a little if I decide to make more.
Next time, I'm sculpting the head separately from the body and THEN put it on.
Also, I think I really hate sculpting hands. Drawing hands is easy, sculpting is hard.
One more thing, I need to figure out a better tactic of smoothing the clay... >___>;;; I looked up suggestions, but the alcohol didn't work very well...

I did take progress pictures, but I think I'll save those for a future art-book I'd like to make.
Her height is about 7.75 inches from the wood base.

Maquette made by me, Caylee.
Pink Pillow girl is *emperpep
(wooden base, wire, screw, super sculpey clay (sculpted with metal wax carving tools), acrylic paint, glaze gloss spray)

Well it does take time and practice to see results. If you're interested in being an artist, just keep at it and believe in yourself. You will be awesome.

I find turpentine smooths clay pretty well, but you have to have a light touch because its like it melts the clay so you don't want to use too much. Also make sure it drys completely before you continue to work on it.

I'll have to see if it works on sculpey and try it out sometime. Thanks for the tip!

That is friggin adorable. I've been dabbling in sculpey and I suuuuck at it. I've found wooden tools can be helpful though. I have a combo set of wooden and metal.

I haven't tried wood before, but I have with plastic... plastic SUCKS. I'm very fond with my metal wax tools though. They work just nicely.

I've been working on it off and on, a little bit each day in between projects, so I can't give you an accurate time, but it around a month.

yeah, I've been seeing a lot of those images of figures on here... but sometimes you actually find the sculptor if it, which is rad.

Thank you.

You did well.

Tips for smoothing: use an old paint brush and water--stiff brush will give texture, soft will help smooth. Or something like a cosmetic or artist sponge. I've never worked with super sculpey clay before--only apoxy--so I don't know how well this will work.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bezzalair In reply to Lesh4537 [2012-01-04 22:26:27 +0000 UTC]

I've never worked with apoxy, but I don't think using an artist/cosmetic sponge or a paint brush and water will work. Sculpey is a very tacky material, kind of like soft wax. I know that it would work for other materials, but not sculpey.

I've recently looked up some more smoothing tactics and someone suggested piano wire looped in a stick.
Looks kind of like this:
C---

I might try that. Thanks for the help though~

Lesh4537 In reply to bezzalair [2012-01-05 03:30:18 +0000 UTC]

I wonder how sculpey would react to oil. I've used vegetable oil to smooth gapoxio--an old, inferior type of apoxy. You might be able to use mineral oil or petroleum jelly.

Good luck with the method you found. Tips are helpful but often it's more trial and error to find the methods that works best for you.

bezzalair In reply to Lesh4537 [2012-01-06 02:29:33 +0000 UTC]

I'll have to try and experiment. Though oil sounds like it might become a greasy mess. o__o

Thanks for the suggestions~

If you run a tooth pick that you've broken to it has a flat side you can smooth it out rather nicely I do that when I make hair pins with vines and roses on them.

it's all about the pressure you put on it. Light pressure should work.
