Description "There are day-dreamers and night-dreamers who dream up make-believe places. They use much imagination, and in that are dream gifted. But the serious dreamers are those who catch dreams and bring them to life to show that when they were dreaming, they meant it." Ashley Rice, Girls Rule.

My first lineless drawing, I think it turned out dreamy. pfft.

This piece does feel like a dream, owing to a number of elements. The background is abstract, with warm colours that evoke a sunset. The lack of outlining also is a fitting technique for the dream theme.

Particularly interesting is the shape behind the bird; it seems to be many things. First, it looks like a window into another world, a forest landscape that is illustrated abstractly with the layering of green colours, and with a pale, clouded sky. We can also ignore these details and look at just the shape. This element is a diamond shape, and I like to look at it as a bed. The feathers and leaves drifting across the view seem to support this perspective, as there is a feather just at one corner of the shape and a leaf at the other. The result is an abstract play of objects that roughly illustrate a bed with two of its legs showing. Maybe the dream catcher above serves as part of the bed frame. In addition to supporting visually, the dream catcher supports the image symbolically, as dream catchers are associated with sleep.

The drawing is interesting to look at. When I saw the thumbnail, my first impression was actually, "is that a bird leaping/flying from a mattress?" But upon viewing the actual drawing, I also see the bird flying through this window from a forest into another world, or maybe it is traveling this dream world, passing by this window free of care. Its open-beak expression looks happy and elated--really adorable.^^

Overall, the way you handled the colouring is skilled. Besides the bird, everything is rendered in minimal detail, allowing for many interpretations. The visual play of this dream would not be so effective if it weren't for these techniques. It is really a beautiful and beguiling illustration, with a finely drawn and expressive bird.^v^

Thank you very much! Sorry for replying so late. Ah I love your critique! And the drawing does look like a bird leaping from a mattress!Haha, it was not intentional but I can totally believe it now that you pointed it out! Thank you for taking so much time to comment on this. I hope to draw many more birds in the future! You have motivated me so much with your comment! Thank you again!

(Me again! Hey wonderful).

You must like birds! I don't blame you, I love birds too. I love the depth that is given from the warm tones in the background, and the contrast with the cool tones of the landscape/colors of the bird.

The face is near perfect on the bird, I really think that you'll find that with birds especially line-less is the best way to portray them. My only critique with the wing feathers is to work on symmetry with the black portions, birds are very symmetrical in their coloring. Additionally, maybe work on saturating the colors of the dream catcher in the upper right hand side. Watercolors are notoriously translucent, which can be a blessing and a curse.

My only other critique is that the tail feathers feel a little short, maybe even just by a bit.

Overall, I enjoyed this beautiful piece by you like I always do. Keep working at it, you are so talented and have such a unique vision.

Hey!
Thank you again! I gotta say, I really appreciate you critiquing my art so thank you very much! I really do enjoy birds, it is true. They fascinate me because I do think of them as living dinosaurs. I am glad the background is colorful in your opinion, I had to put considerable effort into coloring the entire space. I have not done this technique in many years. I used to work with watercolors and drew plenty of birds lineless, however it is not the same style and technique used here. It was more of a one stroke thing.

Thank you for telling me about the symmetry, I actually never thought about that.
It proved quite a bit of trouble for me to draw them, it is one thing I will practice more. I will saturate my next painting better, thank you! Haha, I am with you that it is a good and bad thing.
Aw thank you kind person! I really enjoyed reading this!

To me, this is an amazing piece of work. It is like a dream, a made up place. The colors go so well together and it really does pop out. Personally I feel you did a wonderful job, and not just because it's your first lineless drawing. This is beautiful and it sends me into my own creative thinking. This is a great piece of art. The bird looks extremely realistic too. The added touch of the feathers floating around is a nice added detail that I hope is not lost to others. I am slightly confused about what that is behind the bird, it looks like a mountain, but I can't be sure. But overall, this is a wonderful drawing.

Thank you! I am really happy that you enjoy the leaves and other little details I added. Thank you for the wonderful critique. Yes, there are mountains behind the bird but it is slightly less clear due to the scanner and wrinkles. I used a reference photo to paint this drawing as I am a beginner at birds! ^^ I am overjoyed that you think the jay is realistic as I spent more time that normal referencing.   I hope you have a great day!

ahhhhHHHHHHH WHY are you so talented ??? this looks awesome, liKE EVERYTHING HERE   every thing looks so dynamic and flowing, especially that jay the pose looks so dynamic and that shade of blue you used is fits so well with the backgrounds! its so hard to make the colours correct, especially on trandtional mediums, but you managed to do it ;;w;; you also somehow managed to out do your self with the pose too, those wing feather omg ;w;
and every thing looks so textured just the right way, that cloth on the dream catcher looks silky, the bird looks feathered, and the background looks watercoloury ( in a good way )<3 how many different bushes did you use, that some hard stuff to pull off .v.

i still can't believe this is your first line-less piece, you are lying ;w;

 U jelly?
pffftttt hahaha, but jokes aside, I did use a reference picture for the jay. Welll, it was supposed to be a piece of paper the bird is flying out of......IT IS A CLOTH NOW< A CLOTH I SAY> XD. I used two brushes I think? It was a bit difficult to color the background with such a small brush, I had to constantly reapply the water. Thank you for the comment! I love your comment a lot!

I can never do a lineless drawing, I make so many mistakes. I love the bird! The colors are so pretty and really captures the dream like look.
The only thing I have is the object that the bird is flying out of. It's hard to see what it's supposed to be.

Thank you! I agree, it is hard to tell, the idea was supposed to be a bird flying out of a painting but I could not make it look so "magical"

I thought it was a dream catcher but reversed. ^^'
But it still looks good! it must of been hard to do it without lines.

The loose painterly feel of this picture, together with the texture in the red background being cloud-like, all helps contribute to the dreamy theme that you mention in your comments. The bird itself looks quite realistic, and I like your attention to detail on the wing feathers. ^^

You seem to be replacing Inspire as the bird artist (sorry Inspire), so I'll watch you just for that. I like seeing your birds and I stalk you too much for updates.
This is a very nice picture of a blue jay, it looks rather realistic and I especially like the wing feathers. I'm impressed that you painted this in watercolour, so nice picture overall. ^^
