I love the armour in this piece. I'm sure it took a lot of time and work.

The armour did take some time, but I was happy with the end result. It is one of the first times I used felt tipped pens mixed with graphite in one of my sketches.
Thanks for commenting!

Ooo I always wanted to draw him in his new armour but I don't think I'm quite ready to try it cause he's pretty hard. I love this and I'll never get over how well you draw hair.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like him. But don't sell yourself short. I 'm sure you could draw him in his armor. It was a tedious process, but not terribly hard. I can even give you some tips on ways to make it easier if you like.
I'm glad you like his hair too. This kind of hair is drawn at least fifty percent with an eraser.

No problem!! Yeah this is an awesome drawing! Hmm I still don't quite think I'm ready to draw him just yet cause I tried looking for the perfect pictures from the third movie but there aren't that many just cause it hasn't come out to buy yet.
I'm currently trying to draw Aragorn But when I eventually get brave enough to try drawing Thranduil again (tried a few times) it'd be nice to have some tips for when that time comes!
Yeah in all your drawings the hair is always so realistic and perfect looking! Haha! Yeah I need a better eraser or even one of those gel pen things you were mentioning!

I use an ordinary kneaded eraser. It's the best tool because you can mold it into the shape you want. To make hairs, I just make a sharp blade like edge. The other option is to buy a hard white eraser that is in a holder, almost like a mechanical pencil, then you can cut it to a point and sharpen it to an even better point with an emery board or a little sandpaper. I use both. The gel pen is nice, but sometimes its hard to make it show over graphite. I've found out recently that a little white gouache applied with a tiny paintbrush works better. The hair on this one, though was done completely with pencils and eraser.

I don't have to erase hard. I lightly layer on the darker areas and then erase out some white hair, making sure to do some that go the opposite way or across the straight down hair the way real hair does. I then usually go back through and darken in the dark areas again to make them even more dramatic. If only use the white gouache in places that are too tiny to erase or that I want to be extra bright. Usually highlights in the eyes or in the corner of eyes or wet looking areas on teeth. Gouache is just an opaque paint that you can buy in any art supply story. If you don't have it, white nail polish is a good substitute or white out (also called liquid paper) The gel pen does work too, but you have to make sure you have a good blob of ink on the tip before it will stay on top of the graphite.
Generally the hair in a sketch takes me twice as long as anything else, especially if the subject has a lot of long luxurious hair like Thranuil. In this case, it was the armor that took the longest though.
One of these days I'll try to post a step by step of my hair process, but of course there are many ways to accomplish the same thing and everyone has their own technique.

Those are all really helpful tips so when I eventually get to go to the art store I'll have a better idea of what I need, thanks a ton!!
If you ever do post it I'll be sure to check it out cause you're really good at drawing hair!

I'm sorry I must have forgotten about. I'll see if I can do a quick sketch this weekend for you. What do you think she might look like?

I sent you a note about that. I think you have a glitch of some sort since I actually submitted this to the featured folder. It showed up in the contest folder anyway. You've evidently been having an issue with this with others as well, and I think its not so much a problem with people not reading the rules as it is with a problem with uploading. I never intended this for any contest and didn't even realize you were having one until I looked and saw my drawing had been submitted to that folder. It might be worth checking into.
