Ugh, that blows. So many possibilities.
(Trust me, I KNOW it's much easier said than done) but it's definitely worth the money getting a computer with a bit more power, there's so much you can do with downloadable brushes.
The basic Photoshop brushes lag on mine too but brushes I download from here are alright in most cases, you should try it if you haven't already
