Description I decided to try my hands on a new picture of an old rpg character. I was so proud of this back in the day. I'm not so proud of the new one, even if it is better.
Her name is Tashalara and she is some kind of swashbuckler, sorceress, pirate, gold elf. Yup!Β

What part do you think you didn't improve? I'm curious.

The biggest improvement I made is in figure drawing and general anatomy. But pretty much everything else is only a little better.
I understand colour and light better. Ok I didn't understand it at all back then, so thats a plus.
My skill with composition is about the same. I havn't improved my character designs any all. (I'm not talking about this particular picture obviously.)
But worst of all, back then I created my crappy pictures rather quickly, now my slightly improved work takes a whole lot longer to make. Now I know enough not to make so many mistakes but not enough to make the right choices effortlessly.

I agree with your drawing skills, they did improve.
About your color and light skills, it really depends on what it your goal. What artist inspires you and what you want your work to look like. I personnally like your style. It reminds me the illustrations of old fairytales books. It has a very classic medium feel. But maybe it's not your objective.Β
Composition-wise, it's hard to judge since most of the time you draw character pictures and much less sceneries.
I'm not sure about what you mean when you talk about character design. I think I've mentionned before how I like your non stereotypical way of drawing faces. How your characters, well, have character.
I hear you about work, mate. Excepted for some happy accidents, I spend more and more time on my pictures too and I don't feel like I'm really ion control of what I'm doing.
BTW, would you know a group of digital painters of a decent level to have feed back, advises and get mutual motivation to improve our pictures. I feel a bit isolated art-wise and I'd love to exchange some point of views with fellow artists on regular basis.Β  Β

Thank you Yinetang. I don't know what I wan't my art to look like. But my objective is to learn to do realism convincingly even if I don't think pure realism is what I want to do ultimately.

I'm sorry but I don't know a good place for that anymore. I feel the same thing. There are some artist communties tied to specific artists on Patreon and Youtube that you could join. I never did myself but it could be worth a shot. Like Istebrak
plus.google.com/communities/10…

or maybe Clint Cearley

In any case I would be more than happy to drop by more often leave comment or two.

Thank you Panartias. It's not all about improving. If you are having fun and is able to express your ideas that is worth more.

Well, do you draw everyday? You need to make a lot of art and ideally a lot of studies to improve your skills.

No, I just did a picture after what felt like years - and probably were...

...perhaps I got a bit rusty?!

You actually do become rusty if you don't draw regularly. Keep it up and it will get better and you will start improving.

I actually seldom draw with a reference - but I'm actually better when I do.

But I have two drawings planned for the next time, so we'll see!

Drawing with a reference is always a good idea. You can't expect to know what everything looks like from memory alone.

Some things improved a lot. Other things hardly at all. If I wasn't so lazy I probably would have come a lot further in all these years. Still It's nice to see that I made some improvements. Thanks yinetang.
