I'm guessing this has to be from the Middle Ages. Hungary has an interesting history. It seems that it was changing hands quite a bit from later Roman times, when various tribes moved in and took over the area. Attila set up his kingdom there when he was menacing the Romans. Later, the Avars and Magyars moved in after leaving their homelands in the Asian Steppes, and the latter were the direct ancestors of today's Hungarians.
Hungary was the frontier of the Germanic Holy Roman and Turkish Ottoman empires for many centuries, and ultimately fell into hands of the Austrian Hapsburgs. Hungarians often served as mercenaries in the Austrian army, until their independence was granted after the latter's defeat in World War I.
One thing I can recall reading is that the Magyars were traditionally thought of as one of those nomadic tribes who mastered horse archery, much as their predecessors the Huns did. They were a scourge of Central Europe at the turn of the 10th Century AD, until their defeat by the German Ottonian dynasty in 955 AD.

That places him at the time of the 30 Years War. I'm currently reading a book about the conflict, and guessed at the timeframe here, judging from the style of clothing your character was wearing. Hungary was basically being set up by the Austrians as a buffer state between themselves and the Turks, and these guys were caught up in the middle of all of the fighting.

I may consider watching it sometime. Caine was quite an actor in his time, and I had seen clips of it on YouTube while researching the conflict.
