Description

I struggled more this month to do more drawings, as I originally started on some Sandwing police officers as part of a return to the Dieselpunk WoF AU I had concocted a while back. However, the progress was so sluggish and I had another idea rolling around in my brain that I had to work on, so I put the kaibosh on that for now. So here is a depiction of two Stearman (Stearsar in this universe) XA-21/B-21 bombers passing through the valleys of the Rocky Mountains between Marten Peak and Thunderbolt Peak within Californian territory. They had just bombed an enemy supply dump hidden amid the trees and are now returning to their base, located southeast of the besieged city of Denver.

The B-21, dubbed the Blackwing, was one of a number of speedy twin-engine bombers devised by the Army Air Force (dubbed the B-20 series of Fastbombers) in the mid-1930s. These included the Martin B-22 Maryland, Douglas B-20 Havoc, Curtiss B-28 Razorback, and Martin B-26 Marauder, all of which were designed to be very fast with the intent to outrun enemy fighters whilst striking their targets. They were often armed with four or six Browning machine guns on the noses, so they would be able to strafe in addition to dropping bombs. However, in the initial months of the war against the invading Californians, they often proved incredibly vulnerable to fighter aircraft such as the Loughead Antares that were able to match the Fastbombers in overall speed, while having little in defense compared to the Douglas B-32 and the North American B-25 Mitchell.

Basically, this was me wanting to depict US versions of the German Schnellbombers, as part of an attempt to devise ideas about the US Armed Forces using German-style equipment and doctrines in APW.
