Description Apparently I'm on a bellydancing kick...Well here's a redhead in blue, doing a serpentine or an inward figure eight. Serpentines are a bit different than figure eights, but the have the same elements so she could be doing either.

This movement is parallel to your plane of sight and perpendicular to the floor, so it goes out, up, and back in to your center. Kinda like imagining the movement you would make if you had ice cream scoops facing upwards on your hips and you had to scoop something from walls on either side of you.

Seeing your pictures makes me want to go over to the local studio instead of waiting for my summer class to start! I can't wait. For one, I'm writing a novel and the main character is a belly dancer in her society, and having some "hands" on experience would definitely help me out with it. For two, I'm trying to get into making chainmaille jewelry and belly dancing outfits

This is lovely. Most of the drawings I see of bellydancers get the proportions oddly skewed and don't capture the movement - yours does

And I'll have to tell my teacher that she's not the only one to use desert analogies... I think her best-known were hip circles involving barrels of fudge and spatula belts...

LOL yea, I want her costume too. My favorites are the lavender and blue ones I drew. Thanks for the great feedback. I hardly get anyone commenting on my normal artwork anymore. I think I should stop posting TF commission, heh. I try really hard to get the movement, so I am glad that I did a good job.

Desert analogies motivate! :-D

Ooh, I want the lavender top with the blue skirt and the green hip scarf

You did. I really like these, they make me want to dance.

And yeah, we all learned to do the move right, so there must be something to it!

But then, she also taught us "swan-and-poky-fingers" and "squash-the-cockroach" so I suppose the deserts aren't always necessary

Yay insane dance teachers!

bellsandy In reply to BladeValentine [2008-02-01 17:09:27 +0000 UTC]

Ooo, didn't know that! That's a big problem I've found, nothing is standardized, so the moves are named differently depending on your teacher.

BladeValentine In reply to bellsandy [2008-02-13 11:53:56 +0000 UTC]

That is quite frustrating... =/
My generic belly dance teacher just called it "figure 8", but my ATS teacher called it taxim. I like taxim 'cause it sounds cooler!

I think the move you describe here we call the "bicycle" Like an up and down figure 8? Looks great; like the other bellydance work you've done

bellsandy In reply to whysp80 [2007-09-24 18:58:47 +0000 UTC]

Yup, we called in an inward figure 8, because you're pushing out, then pulling up, then in to center . Or she could be starting an outward 8 to her right, going up, out, then back to center. Thanks for the comment~!

This is really nice. I like the series as a whole, and I especially like the sheer effect you got in the skirt on this one. The Artist Comments explaining the poses makes it more interesting as well. Always nice to learn something new.

Thanks very much. I like the blue one the best because of the sheerness you mentioned, though I like the lavender one as well.

Clever ^^. And you had a teacher for BellyDancing? I had to learn from a DVD I borrowed from a friend ;

You're Welcome, btw.

bellsandy In reply to NakitaMelo [2007-08-03 14:07:04 +0000 UTC]

Sure I had a teacher. I went to several different classes including veil, zills, tribal, and fusion. I was lucky enough to have a studio in the area offer classes.

I've moved so I am in the process of looking for more, but since this is a college town the classes are kinda organized by semesters...it's annoying that I can't start right away.

DVDs can be good too, but nothing replaces interactive teaching, if you find a teacher that is any good :-D. What DVDs have you used?

NakitaMelo In reply to bellsandy [2007-08-03 14:19:06 +0000 UTC]

Wow... Lucky

Well, erm. It was only one dvd and I believe it was...Fitness for Beginners...

With those twins Veena and Neena. Originally I just wanted to borrow something to work out to. And thats's when Becky let me borrow that dvd, and I just loved belly dancing ever since. lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bellsandy In reply to NakitaMelo [2007-08-06 13:44:02 +0000 UTC]

Veena and Neena are good. Their videos seem to be more of a workout, but I really liked the Arms, Abs, Hips, Buns, and Thighs ( or whichever one has all three body areas) . That one was tiring.

I could recommend Art of the Drum Solo, I enjoyed that one though it may take you a couple times through to get all the moves. Part of it is kind of a choreography and it's challenging. It teaches you basic drum rhythms and common moves that go easily with them.

There's another one with the dancer Jenna...Bellydance Basics and Beyond, that has a lot of content and she explains a lot of th moves really well. My friend had some trouble mimicking her since she didn't really know how her body was supposed to move or how to apply her directions - that was her first exposure to belly dance. [link] I think you'd get it by repeating the dvd though. The warmup on that one is long enough to tire me out by itself!

I know you didn't ask, but I hope you try out more dvds, if not the ones above. It's very fun and I know I'll be trying to do it for a long time.

Most beautiful. I especially admire the pose, coloring and costume detail - particularly the transparency of her skirt, and the tilt of her hips, which lends to the feel of motion.

Thanks so much for all the comments and FAVs! I really appreciate you taking the time to leave some. This one seems to be the favorite for some reason. As I continued the series they became a little more finished, like the details you mentioned. The lavender one is the latest, but I think the blue is still favored the most. So glad the motion came through in all of them.

So far this one seems to be the favorite. Not sure why X-D

Just like anything bellydancing takes a while to get used to. I had to take three beginner classes before I was ready to move up to intermmediate. Your body eventually learns how it's supposed to move as you practice and it gets easier

Okay ... -this- one is my favourite. For sure.

Her pose is so nice - the fact that you're taking classes and actually know something about what you're drawing makes it even better - and for some reason, I'm loving the way you drew her face.

Nice contrast, by the way, making her a redhead with the blue outfit. Blue ...! <3

I like this series! I think it'd make a really fun three-paneled sort of thing, maybe like a desktop image for a wide-screen laptop!

Wewt redheads. It's a shame the one in red wasn't blonde .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bellsandy In reply to ladyofx [2006-11-16 21:27:02 +0000 UTC]

Why's that? I actually had her blonde at first, but I figured the darker colors would go better with the red. :-/ Hm maybe I can do one more...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ladyofx In reply to bellsandy [2006-11-16 23:27:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, because you've got the brunette in green and green looks good on brunettes but it's a traditionally "redhead" color, and blue looks good with redheads but it's a traditionally "blonde" color, and I think that red looks good on blondes even though you get more brunettes who try to do the sultry thing wearing red. As long as it's the right kind of blonde .

When I was thinking to myself "what color clothes would go good for a blonde?" my answer to myself was red until I remembered you already did red.

I was sad.
