Description For the longest time, Buzz was the one with Jessie in front of the mirror. It was a more romantic setting until I decided to replace Buzz with Woody. This pic is based on a scene from one of my fanfics. I wanted each chapter to focus on a different aspect of the Jessie/Woody/Buzz trio. The first chapter is about the trust and understanding between Buzz and Woody. Woody sees something is out of place with Jessie. Buzz doesn't know what the heck is going on, but he believes that Woody is acting in everyone's best interest. The final chapter focuses on Buzz and Jessie. The middle chapter, from whence this pic comes from, focuses on Woody and Jessie.

These three work together so well yet there is one aspect that seems to leave out one person. For example, the romance between Buzz and Jessie makes Woody a third wheel when they want to get cozy. The friendship between Woody and Buzz often leaves out Jessie. In the beginning of the third movie, Woody and Buzz are trying to mentally prepare everyone to go to the attic. It's clear that Buzz and Woody have talked at great length about this before, but this is all news to Jessie. Then, there's the Woody/Jessie relationship.

Woody and Jessie's relationship is hands down one of the most unique, multifaceted character interactions I have ever seen in an animated movie.

When they first meet, Woody is taken aback by an overzealous Jessie. She sees him as a “savior” of sorts, the answer to all her problems. Her hero worship of him quickly dissolves into disillusionment when Woody reveals that he still has an owner. Her disillusionment and anger causes such an antagonism between them that it escalates into a physical brawl. Woody reluctantly tries to set things right between them. With her dreams shattered once again, she drops her facade and opens up to Woody about her past. This is the turning point not only of the second movie, but in their relationship.

In the Toy Story universe, it is every toy's desire to be loved and played with by a child. That is enough for any toy, but to be a child's favorite is the Holy Grail of toydom. Only a privileged few will ever experience such a unique position. The other toys cannot hope to understand. This is evidenced when Woody is surprised that Jessie is able to accurately describe what Woody means to Andy. Woody is so moved by her story that he abandons all thought of going back to Andy. This is the part of the story where they become kindred spirits with both understanding what it means to be a child's favorite. This is something that Buzz could never understand. Although Andy loves Buzz well enough, Andy's favorite was and always has been Woody.

Now that the bond between them has been formed, this bond will be tested twice before the end of the second movie. The first test comes when Woody decides to go back with Buzz to Andy. The first time Woody tries to leave, he has every intention of going alone. This time he starts out alone but then decides to take Jessie and the others with him. Jessie is hesitant, but Woody is able to reach out to her. Just as Jessie was able to hit a soft spot with Woody by describing his relationship to Andy, Woody is able to tactfully throw it back at Jessie by describing her deep desire to have just one more day with her formal owner.

The second and final test comes when Woody goes out to save Jessie. It's here that their relationship comes full circle. In the beginning, she sees Woody as her “savior.” This time Woody reprises his “savior” status in her eyes. The main difference is that she is no longer enamored by his status as THE Sheriff Woody. Woody knows what Jessie has lost and Jessie knows what Woody is willing to lose to save her. They both work to overcome the final obstacle and Woody falls. Jessie catches him and leaves them in a seemingly no-win situation (climb back into the plane to face a lonely, uncertain future, or jump and be crushed under the tires).

For much of Jessie's life, she's hardly ever taken an active role in her destiny and has lived by the choices of others. For example, when she falls behind the bed in Emily's room, Jessie never tries to put herself out where Emily could find her. She just stays in the same spot for years. Undoubtedly, the Prospector tricks her into wanting to go to the museum and she just goes along with it.

When Woody falls, Jessie has his life in her hands. Woody can save them but only if Jessie allows it. The ball is in her court. The climax of the second movie revolves around her decision. By literally taking a leap of faith with Woody, she has made her choice and in essence becomes her own savior. Rather than say “I did it” or “You did it,” she says, “We did it!”

Jessie can no longer see Woody as her savior, but as a friend and equal. The bond between them is sealed. A kids movie, folks! You rock, Pixar!

I actually thought about changing her expression, but then realized that she tends to go from one extreme to another when it comes to expressing herself.

Whoah... Your overview of the progressive relationship between Woody and Jessie was absolutely touching. It really moved me. I've watched the second movie far too many times to count, but you've pointed out things in this analysis that I wouldn't even begin to be able to describe. Though parts of your overview here were reviewed in your fic 'Go Figure!', I was most certainly shocked by the depth of your choice of words. There was just so much meaning behind what you said that left me completely and utterly flabbergasted as I stared at the text in awe. I simply just can't even begin to explain how thankful I am for this, so I'll move onto the drawing

This is absolutely beautiful. There is just so much warmth behind their expressions and the surroundings around them You seriously do have a heck of a lot of talent, so cherish it deeply and keep up the smashing work!

All the best wishes, and a Happy New Year.

Happy New Year!

Thank you once again for all the kind words. Pixar gives us so much to work with in terms of characterization. For the New Year, I'm going to have a Toy Story movie marathon party!

Be blessed!

You're welcome I've noticed that they have strong characterisation in all the films they produce, though I wouldn't expect anything less from them.

I had a Toy Story Marathon last week, and I certainly did enjoy it ^_^

Right back at you!

Before I say something about the art itself I have to say I was deeply moved by your words in the description. You managed to describe how accurate their relationship is word to word so smoothly and beautifully. I couldn't stop reading, you literally caught my eyes letting me read from beginning to end in result of a huge smile on my face and I felt my eyes burn. I couldn't even come close to describing them as well as that. So I thank you so much for a wonderful read

Onto the art. I remember seeing the lineart for this quite a while ago before I made an account here. I'm glad to have come across it again otherwise I would have missed out on quite a find. I was left in awe then and I'm left in awe now. I'm glad I found this again They will always be there for each other no matter what relationship they're in. The kind of bond between friends everyone wants in their lives

I'm blushing! I'm glad you enjoyed the analysis as much as the pic. Pixar movies generally are written with such depth and richness that a kid could enjoy it at face value and adults can enjoy the complexity of the characters.
