Description
Those summer days... When the grass is green and the blue summer sky is mirrored in the lakes and the rivers. A summer breeze, just enough to rustle the leaves, bringing a bit of cool air.
And the animals. Peace everywhere - or rather, as peaceful as nature ever gets. Some young hunting foxes form an exception - but then, they are predators, and they need to learn to hunt. And to watch them is an experience on it's own.
And the deer. You will find them grazing on almost every field and meadow. Maybe the farmers don't like it, but even they cannot deny the beauty. The does with their spotted calves, those calves playing or laying in the grass...
And the stags, of course. Walking in real boy clubs, their antlers growing for every day, preparing themselves for the battles they know will come in the autumn and the rutting season.
How I love those summer days.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lo and behold, a fullbody with detailed background. And a stag with its velvet antlers, something you do not see often in art.
(For those who don't know: deer lose their antlers every year, and are therefore forced to regrow them every year too. While the antlers grow they are covered by skin, called "velvet".)
I do really like this drawing, but I also had the painful realization that I really need to practice drawing grass. And how extremely long time such drawings take.

Beautiful! It isn't as brawny as your previous one, but it still looks very good. I'm guessing this guy's a juvenile?

Thank you!
He's a bit younger than the other one, yes. But it also has a lot with perspective to do... I should to a side-view of a stag one day

Yes, of course, and then it would have been easy to crop it out. I know, I'm a bit paranoid, but I don't want to deal with art thieves.

Ooh, is this the stag I've been hearing rumors of? He's lovely! I like the velvet antlers-- you're right, not many people draw those. You did a good job with them.Β
My eye isn't quite sure what to do with the drastic color differences between his coat and the grass. It's almost like they are lit by different sources. But in a way, that just makes him "pop" more, so it's not entirely a bad thing.
Great anatomy, awesome textures, obviously well-researched. Great job!

Yes, it is
Thank you so much! I did take a new photo, as the other one didn't show the colors entirely right... You know, those stupid cameras... But it's still better than that old, horrible scanner which for some reason doesn't take colors well. Basically - not at all.

I like the new photo better. The whole image looks much more unified... like your subject actually belongs in his surroundings. Good call.
If you ever find a scanner that captures color well, let me know. I use one at my local public library that does an OK job, but tends to leave things a little over saturated. I still prefer it to the home models I've tried.

Over saturated would not be a problem if you have some photo editor... But it's just bad when the scanner leaves things so under saturated that it's B&W. Oh, and which only scans at like 100 dpi.
I'll tell you, but I doubt I'll find one soon
