An ode to one of my cats, who passed away earlier today.
Her name was Norman (yes, she's a she, and her name's Norman , so named by my Dad after Norman Bates because when she was a kitten she was psycho and shredded the living room curtains trying to climb them, among other things... ), and she left us at a grand old age of 17 years.
We nearly lost her a year and a half ago, when her problems began, and thanks to the vet who discovered the cause and carried on treating her up until the very end, we were able to enjoy a further 18 months with her, before she took a turn for the worse earlier this week and we had to let her go.
She's not the first pet I've lost; four years ago I said goodbye to another cat, and I can imagine the two of them running through the clouds, together again. It brings a smile to my face knowing that she's free now.
For anyone who knows the feeling, it's not a pet that you lose. It's a member of your family, who means as much to you as any relative, especially when they're with you for so long. I started this drawing a few weeks ago with her in mind, when it began to dawn on me that she might not have long left, and finished it today. To thank the vet for all that he has done for such an amazing soul, I'm going to give this to him. The image came from Normie's tortoiseshell coat, which inspired a load of tiger-related nicknames, including mine ('tigress', but pronounced 'tigris').
