A perfectly chosen title for a very atmospheric picture indeed. The straight lines of the massive pipes, one of the striking features of this photograph, create an interesting contrast with the tortuous shape of the train carriages, the same way the jumble of industrial paraphernalia in the bottom half of the picture gives way to the verticality of buildings, chimneys and bare trees -- and finally to an empty sky. Most of all, this landscape of snow and rust carries with it a strong sense of melancholy, the wintry sadness one feels when facing the dereliction of once great man-made structures, and the dreams that went with them.
