I always like to take care of lights and all the set in general. It is a main component to the picture, imho.
Also a simple tiny brightness/contrast adjust from any paint program can help to improve it a bit.

Ah, that is what I sometime do, I use Topaz filters which can do wonders, one of my favorites brings out details and if used on a layer, you can go as heavy or light as you wish.Β
I remember a note of yours where you explained about how you do lighting and shading, I will have to look that up because it has been a wee while...
