Description so some peeps have been asking me about my process... my process is nothing special, but if it helps to see a few progress shots then why not :>

this is one idea I've been wanting to do for a couple weeks, and it's a typical starter sketch in MS Debut. I use no references for the figure, only my knowledge of anime proportions and my own prefs for a six/seven-year-old-ish kid. I did a pict a couple of weeks back that required me to research Sengoku era Japanese clothing, worn by higher classes and daimyos, so I refed the general design of those, although I just figured out a color scheme myself already for this one that I've not seen anywhere else.

the birdcage designs are refed because I know nothing about birdcages, much less bamboo or 1500s oriental ones and these will probably be altered a bit when I start painting. probably not hugely accurate and I don't want to spend stupid amounts of time worrying about those so, yeah.

this is pretty much all I will use for my guide when I import to Photoshop and start adding values and textures. I also don't know at this point whether it will work out, whether it's an indoor pic or an outdoor pic, or what kind of background I will put in. I'll decide that later depending on whether I'm more confident with moody tones or sunlit ones. I'll explain the premise of the picture when it's done

will move this to scraps at a later date, and will try to show a sequential process in another pic.

here's the process sequence: bastardprince.deviantart.com/a…

This looks great so far. I'll keep my eyes on the process; I could probably learn a things or two The birdcages do look really nice. I bet the finished will look awesome, and I'll be happy to see the finished version :la.

thanks ^^ at this stage I'm not sure what it will finally look like apart from a general image in my brain. but, the beauty of digi is that you can always save at various stages and go back if it's going somewhere you don't like. My routine is to save about 20-40 versions of a single picture as I go through the whole process (yea, it's a lot O.O) and always use layers for each new bit you do so you can reverse or alter small parts of the picture instead of ruining the whole thing if you screw up. when I think it's done I throw the backups away unless I'm making a tutorial or sequence with them like this time.

That's one of the many reasons why digital can be a big time saver.  I make multiple versions, too, but not nearly that many! O.o I use layers out the nose, as well. Everything has its own layer in case I want to change it later (why traditional can be a pain sometimes; I'd have to trace the image multiple times to have the other version of it in case I wanted to do something else with it.)

I hope it helps, I'll post a real sequence of progress in a long pic with some tips if I can think of anything useful to say

That would be absolutely fantastic. I want to work digitally (draw on a tablet and then modify, etc.) but have no idea where to start, what equipment I should get, or what programs. I'd like to know what I'm talking about before I go down to the store!

I would say you could draw this by hand and scan it first if that's your preferred method (which is how I used to work until this year and use a tablet only for coloring) but I've found that by making myself sketch digitally I really do have more freedom/efficiency and I waste less paper. . .

I'm currently using a Wacom Bamboo which is probably the most basic 'decent' model of tablet going. I'd like a better one with a little more sensitivity and shortcuts but it does the job. you really need a tablet with pressure sensitivity to get the sort of effects I do in some of my pics, and the Bamboo seems the best value for money so far for something to start with that has this functionality, followed by the Intuos series. (the nibs wear down and you can get refills, but I guess that's just how they all are now, my old Wacom Sapphire still has the original nib from 2004 but it's like drawing with a brick)

for programs... if you're into drawing manga I recommend one of the MangaStudio programs like Debut or MangaStudio EX4 for your lineart. seriously, I bought it only because I wanted a program that had a stash of screentones and I realised it's a GEM for inking and making manga generally. probably my favorite inking program, period, for manga or just about anything else. you can also color with it, but I am more comfortable using SAI or Photoshop for that.

I don't think it matters too much which programs you use to color... I have Corel Painter IX, Photoshop CS and CS5, SAI and MS Debut as my four main ones, but I would probably say you only need Photoshop or SAI. the others like Painter are more for fancy effects or trying to emulate real painting, and I use SAI because pics colored with those are what mangaka and artists use generally with Japanese manga... you can tell a picture that's been painted with it. you can get some great subtle watery or watercolor style effects with SAI when you use it to color, and you can draw from scratch with it too. there's no English version officially available but you can find an English version around. so if you wanna go down the route of studying manga and how it's done I'd say check out SAI and learn to use it. But you could also use one of the Photoshop CS for the advanced features that let you control color and tone curves, sharpen and filter and other stuff that SAI does not have. ^^

maybe there are others that are worth checking out like Muro here from DA but I have never used it. . .

so this is what I use and for what:

Wacom Bamboo (everything)
MS Debut or MS EX4: all lineart and sketches to get inking style (v. good to have for manga)
SAI: painterly manga coloring or effects, or for picts with a Japanese style (good to have but not essential)
Photoshop CS: the staple for coloring, adding values, and color correction and final tweaks on all picts (essential)
Painter IX: sometimes use for interesting effects like neon, glow, and lightning filters. (not essential)

hope this helps :>

Oh my gosh thank you so much for taking time to type all of this up!!! It's exactly what I needed to know. I don't have too much money to experiment with so knowing beforehand what I need is a must. You have no idea how much this helps!

I should add you don't *have* to use Photoshop, I know it's expensive and now Adobe want to start offering it on rental (and that is too expensive for me too). But you do need to find an image editor that can do everything you want and isn't a pain to use. There's also freeware out there that does the same sort of thing and designed as another answer to Photoshop so don't take my word for Photoshop being absolutely 'essential' per se, but I would say something that can do what Photoshop does in letting you correct color and has the OVERLAY, COLOR and MULTIPLY layer functions is definitely important. SAI has most of these so it should be a good choice, although it doesn't have as many useful functions when it comes to being able to fine-tune your layers and color channels.
