As though the internet suffers from a dearth of Naruto fanart...Still, I needed to make this joke. I'm sure it's occurred to other people too (seriously, those shoes are SO impractical!), but I really wanted to poke fun at ninja footwear while also giving Kankurou some attenion. I love me some underappreciated characters!
Aw, I really just love the sand sibs. I love them both pre- and post time jump. I love old skool, "I don't care about you and you can go die" Gaara with "Dude he seriously freaks me out" Kankurou and Temari, and I love "I must defend my village and my siblings!" Gaara with"OMG must save our little brother!" Kankurou and Temari. Good stuff.
There are a bunch of little details I dislike about the art in my little comic, but I'm pretty pleased, overall. Just ignore my failure to draw everyone's weapons so they actually look like they're carrying them...yeah...panel 2 kinda fails at that.

Seriously, it would take Gaara like two seconds to get the sand out of Kankurou's shoes. He just won't do it. Because he's old skool Gaara--he hates everyone. <3
I'm glad you share my confusion about this shoe business! My only theory right now is that the sand ninjas walk on sand like they would on water--hence Temari's comment that Kankurou isn't carrying himself properly.

That's a good question! I think maybe he just wants to look awesome.
Also, white clothes are very hard to keep clean. I imagine this is particularly hard when you're such an awesome ninja. "Tch, bloodstains AGAIN?"
