Description Here is a moth I like to call polkagris mal or the peppermint moth, I have no idea what it's actual name is.
edit: apparently it does have a real name: Cyana perornata

caught in a light trap in Danum valley, Borneo.

I heard that Danum's a lovely place! ^^ When we visited Borneo, we sadly only visited Kinabatangan, as I have a little brother, and Danum's apparently not terribly kid-friendly, so we gave it a miss. Hope to go back there sometime though.

Great shot! A lovely moth. We saw a similar species on the Kinabatangan, but not this vividly colored.

yeah it was, and I can agree that it's not the most child-friendly of places. I hope you get the chance to go there in the future. Our trip did not involve going to kinabatangan so I guess you saw things that we did not

thank you. we saw quite a lot of moths but the colour of this one kinda stood out to me, like a peppermint candy.

Yeah definitely not And yep, definitely Well, you probably saw most of the same things, as the majority of the big mammals can be seen at Danum too- we saw Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey, Red Leaf Monkey, Silver Leaf Monkey, and both Macaques. We missed the Elephant though :/ I also noticed a fair about of birds (a bit of a birder myself), including several eagles, two storks, three egrets, one broadbill, four hornbills, and many more common species, like Crimson Sunbird, Little Spiderhunter, Orange-bellied Flowerpecker, etc.

Yeah, this guy definitely stands out in a crowd

yeah we saw those too, and a few others of my group saw gibbons as well. we also saw sambar deer and bearded pigs. we didn't get to see the elephants either(well, our teacher did, lucky bastard). we also got to some of the smaller mammals like bats civets and flying squirrels. as for birds i saw hornbills, little spiderhunter, some sunbird and a couple of owls. we also saw quite a lot of frogs. incuding one that BBC had been looking for for two weeks.

Oh cool! We also saw Bearded Pigs, they came right up the lodge at night to eat leftovers put there by the resort staff, I'd forgotten that. A pretty cool experience! Also plenty of bats, and I'm pretty sure there was some species difference, but they were really much too fast for me to even come close to identifying. And yeah, we missed Saltwater Crocodile too, turns out the other boat saw one right on the bank, lucky guys. Our only reptiles were the giant Monitors and one lethargic Mangrove Snake. And cool! Did you go on a night walk? We didn't see either of those two. Owls, nice! We missed the night cruise, so Buffy Fish Owl was missed, when it could've been easily gotten. What kind of frog was that?

cool, I ended up a little to close for comfort to a sow and her young that was kinda scary. yeah identifying bats in flight would be quite hard. we kinda got swarmed by bats when some of the guys disturbed them, and our teacher managed to catch one in a net, I still have no idea what kind of bat it was though.

as for reptiles we saw waglers pit viper, white nosed watersnake quite a few different species of skinks and of course geckos. and while not in Danum but in kota kinabalu we also saw monitors and some of the class saw a sea snake there as well. i missed it though. but I saw the shark so at least it was that. It would have been cool to see a crocodile.
yeah we went on several night walks as well as a night drive. we also went out specifically to look for tarsiers but didn't find any
the frog BBC was after was wallaces flying frog, aside from that one we also saw a bornean horned frog, and a lot of other spices of frogs as well. but given that we was doing a exercisce in surveying  frogs in streams that is to be expected.

Oh wow that must've been pretty scary o.o Did you back off, or did they move on? And yeah, I think you need one of those devices through which you can hear their calls to identify them properly. Even when in the hand, they can really be quite hard to identify, as many of the same genus look essentially the same...

Oh very nice! We didn't see either of those snakes, only the Mangrove Snake. We saw plenty of skinks, and our lodge's lobby which was mostly open on either side, was full of geckos at night. There was one that croaked quite loudly in a strange way, almost like a dog. Water Monitors would come in during afternoon to take the scraps which the pigs missed, and there was a bright green lizard near the entrance of Gomantong which I had identified, but forgotten the name of...and wow, a sea snake and a shark! That's pretty amazing. We went diving off a nearby island (Frigatebirds were the highlight for me, as well as the numerous fish) but no sharks or snakes, un/fortunately. What species of shark was it?

Sad to hear Tarsiers are apparently common at Sepilok's Rainforest Discovery Centre, is that where you guys went?

That one! Yeah, those guys are pretty impressive. And nice! Sounds like my kind of exercise

I backed off slowly and waited for the piggies to move on, but i kinda had to get past them to get to the lodgings.

The mangrove snake is pretty cool though, we had hoped to see it when we visited Kota kinabalu wetland centre, but no such luck. really? a croaking gecko, weird.

the shark was a white tip reef shark. the fishes was nice though we never went diving, only snorkeling (I had planed to learn how to dive in Bali before we went to Borneo but I and a friend of mine got sick so that didn't happen) but there still was a lot to see with many pretty corrals and fishes.

really? We had planed to go on a night walk there but there were some problems. apperantly there was no nightwalk that night even though, earlier that day we had been told that there was going to be one .  No we went looking for tarsiers around danum wally field center where we was staying.

Oh wow o.o Certainly scary, but it seems like you did the right thing. Pigs can be pretty aggressive, and if you had tried to walk around them or get closer to the little ones, that definitely might've gotten dangerous.

Oh, you missed it? :/ That's unfortunate to hear, it was a lovely creature. One of the only snakes we saw, too, I think We did get the flying Draco ones, too, I think I forgot to mention that. I'm not sure, but I think the noise was made by its tail, according to a friend who lived there once. Didn't actually see the gecko making the sound though, so I'm not sure.

Cool! I never did see a shark, but that must've been pretty interesting I don't think I've ever seen a shark in the wild, really. Sorry, I meant snorkeling Sad to hear you didn't go diving, but cool that you still got some interesting creatures.

We were originally going to go on a night -cruise- which I think would've been fantastic, but no cigar Oh, nice! I've heard about that place, as well as the Bornean Rainforest Lodge. Was it a good place to stay?

yeah.

ah now that you mentioned it, I remember we got to see one of those too. My friends go to see it fly but I missed that.
ah yes it does seem plausible that it used it's tail.

yeah it was interesting, and now can say that I have swum with a shark. . yeah, two weeks earlier when we were on the gili islands in Indonesia we got to see turtles too and a cuttlefish that one I thought was pretty cool. at first I could not see what our guide was pointing at, then he did something, poked it or something and it flashed a brighter colour before changing back into camouflage in a split second.

too bad that you didn't get to go on that night cruise, sometimes things don't always goes as planed.

I think it was a all-right place to stay. no luxury though, for that you would have to go to the rainforest lodge. (we went there for a drink one day, it was fancy) but defiantly adequate. the food was quite nice too mostly chicken and rice of course but good.  however don't really know how it is to be there as a tourist as we was there with our university as part of a course in tropical ecology.
