Phlox divaricata is fragrant and sometimes called Wild Sweet William... so yes it is indeed a wild phlox... and it does grow wild and native here in Ohio... and in much of the East and Midwest... as you can see here with the USDA PLANTS database: [link] and it is a delightful plant for the shaded garden as well... cultivars have been introduced such as 'London Blue' which was a wild form more blue in color from woods near New London, PA.

Thank you for verifying this. The floor of the woods where I shot this photo is sometimes covered with them. I did not know that "Sweet William" was the same as phlox. I had originally thought it was Sweet William but when looked it up, can't remember where, the photo showed them as white. After more searching it seemed more like phlox than anything else, so again, thanks.

Wow! It is definitely a phlox because I bought this one for my garden but didn't realize it was a wild species. Whereabouts is this?

This was shot on a trail through the woods in a St. Louis County park. I know that wild phlox exists and,as far as I know, there's never been any houses here so just assumed it was the wild variety. Maybe it's feral phlox.
Thanks very much for the , I appreciate it.

Especially nice as we have snow on the ground today.

Thanks. We've probably had our last snow, now just have to worry about severe storms and tornadoes....especially tonight(to many of those this year).
