Humans do something similar. Back rubs, back scratching, running fingers through each-others hair, massage. Birds do it and its called preening, apes and chimps and monkeys do it and its called grooming, and humans do it... and we don't have an easy name for it, but we certainly need more of it. Its not erotic, its just intimate and feels really good. You can tell how much out interpersonal skills as a species suck by the fact that most of us are scared of physical intimacy. If we practiced more physical intimacy, asking for it and giving it, we would probably fix a lot of problems.
I'm not an MLP fan, but this? These kinds of feeling I can get behind. Closeness, knowing someone knows how you feel in that moment, trust. But Feather is more like a Nail tham a fur, or hair, so its more like a Ingrow nail... and the only way to avoid this, its pulling up.. imagine you pulling up your nail, its same way the birds do on preening... that's what get me... thinking when I saw this.

I have some doubts it's that painful. The ones that they are pulling out are mostly dead feathers or feathers that have fallen out but have become entangled in the wings.
Also nails are far broader anchored than nails and also are meant to fall out, nails are not supposed to fall out. I don't think it's exactly the same.
When you brush someone you also are pulling out quite a few hairs. When brushing a horse you also pull out manes and you do it with quite a bit of force. I don't see the difference in that.
