Description F-58A Hammer

Overview:

The F-58A Hammer is an ultra-long range, hypersonic heavy fighter designed for air dominance and rapid strike missions. Its design is based off of the proven F-33A Rapier II hypersonic multirole fighter, and thus shares much of its technology. In addition to the proven technology inherited from its predecessor, the aircraft also brings new technologies to the fighter world. The most notable of these technologies include SynVision, which is a form of synthetic vision designed for this, and other higher performance aircraft. It allows unparalleled situational awareness when compared to convention cockpit designs along with reducing RCS and aerodynamic drag. In addition to SynVision, F-58 also uses a more advanced variant of EO-DAS designed just for this aircraft.

Other advanced technologies include DAESA (Distributed Actively Electronically scanned Array), which places multiple AESA panels in various places around the aircraft to provide 360˚ radar coverage. This aircraft is also capable of mounting a Free-Electron Laser (FEL) weapon of 2Mw in output in place of a fuselage internal fuel tank ahead of the weapons bay. For kinetic needs, there is a pair of JAHG 40mm coil guns mounted in conformal pods under each wing. This is primarily an anti-satellite and anti-bomber weapon intended to destroy targets in one or two shots.

Flight control is provided by a quadruple redundant neural network computer system capable of adapting to any situation, including damage to the control surfaces or failure of a control surface. Due to this system, a safe landing can be performed with up to 50% of either wing damaged or missing. The system also keeps this slightly unstable design artificially stable, which increases agility to a level an aircraft of its size normally cannot reach. All flight controls, including thrust vectoring and the reaction control systems are directly controlled by this flight control system.

Avionics wise, this aircraft is state of the art. It utilizes a neural network based artificially intelligent computer system capable of performing data processing, target discrimination, and management of aircraft sub-systems. This allows the two man crew to put all of their focus on the mission without distraction. This AI can also provide input on tactics and provides a backup in the event either of the crew members becomes incapacitated. The AI also closely monitors the flight control system, and in the event of a possible collision with either the terrain or another aircraft it will take over to prevent a collision. The AI can be completely locked out of the flight control system at the crew’s discretion.

Doesn't have micro-missile launchers (aka ADMM), but it does have a pair of 40mm electromagnetic coil guns under the wings. Coil guns are a close cousin to the rail gun...

Yes, it is a type of laser being developed by Boeing and Raytheon for the US military. Has the potential for much higher output for the same size as a solid state laser. Output can be even greater than that of a chemical laser such as the COIL in the YAL-1 ABL.
