Description
Water was getting everywhere. Dick tried, and failed to get out of the capsule, as it sank deeper and deeper into the ocean.
Everything went to hell when he had to emergency land in the middle of the ocean.
Maybe he should have listened to Bruce, when the man said becoming an astronaut wasn't a good idea.
He lost communication with the rescue team a few minutes before crashing.
It would take them a long time to get here. And seeing as the water level was rising to his neck right now, he didn't have that time.
He was locked in a tiny capsule in the middle of nowhere.
It could be worse, right?
He watched a shark swim by the window.
...sigh.
Everything he could have done was done. He had nothing else to do, but to wait until the whole capsule was completely filled with water, so he could get the door open.
To be fair the HQ did warn him that stuff like this could happen.
But Dick being a very brave 26 year old that he was, he ignored Babs and Artemis's warnings and decided to do the stupid repair mission in space anyway.
The water was so high that he had to crane his neck upwards to breathe.
Something brushed against the capsule, but Dick didn't pay it no mind.
If he was going to get eaten by sharks, so be it. He won't die helpless, locked in a capsule.
He took the last breath while he could before trying to open the door again.
With the pressure beetween inside and outside of the capsule being the same, he managed to open the hatch.
He felt lightheaded.
He saw parts of his ship sinking down along with some scrap metal. When he looked up, he saw how freaking far it was to the surface.
He had little air left and his suit was weighting him down. He could see sharks swimming by, getting more interested and swimming closer the more he struggled.
He corners of his vision started darkening and he found himself going down instead of up. He was sinking.
When had he stopped swimming up? He doesn't remember.
There was a guy in front of him. Looking at him in concern. So this is heaven? If it were dead then his lungs wouldn't hurt so much. So what is happening?
The guy leans closer, and presses their lips together. What.
And then there is air, wonderfull air and Dick can think clearly again and there IS a guy in front of him IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN, smiling at him and asking if he's alright...underwater? The guy is talking? underwater?
Dick opens his mouth and bubbles come out. The guy rolls his eyes and kisses him again. And there is air. again.
'Stop loosing air dude.' He chides him 'Shake your head for no, nod for yes okay?'
Dick nods. He still doesn't know what is happening, but he is kind of worried because there are at least 4 sharks around them?
'Was there anyone here with you?' The guy asks looking around.
Only then Dick notices the tail. The guy has a tail.
The guy is a mermaid...or a merman I guess. He shooks his head in disbelieve.
'I'm Wally' the merman says before he presses their lips together again, and it's a good thing he remembers about Dick's need to breate, because Dick sure as hell doesn't anymore.
'I'll need you to hold on, I'm going to bring you to the surface, SLOWLY, so the pressure doesn't kill you, alright?'
Dick nods, and then there are arms wraping around him, and he's going up.
He's not sure what to think about the trip, seeing as the sharks are still swimming by them, he's being held and kissed by a merman ...well, not kissed really.
More like simple press of lips so he can breathe but it easier to think about it as a kiss.
And Wally doesn't stop talking all the way to the surface, asking questions, rambling about stuff, introducing Dick to the sharks even, and also talking about 'last time something like this happened I didn't know you humans needed air! Poor Kent, had waved his arms around for a full minute before I understood what he meant!'
Wait...Kent? Kent Nelson?!
The guy who also was an astronaut and also emergency crashed in the middle of the ocean, and was found on an island 60 miles from the capsule...80 years ago? What?! Just how old was this Wally?
They finally broke the surface. And Dick could share his name and his questions.
But first he spluttered for air and had to fight off a killer headache.
Wally acutally helped him to take off most of his costume.
He didn't want anything weighting him down and making him drown, but he also didn't like to loose too much body heat.
Wally then left him on a small island, a long way away from the crash.
He then made Dick promise to 'stay safe please! I am not supposed to help humans that fall into the water. Oh! And say hi to Kent Nelson for me! And if you could give this back to him, please?' And he gave Dick some weird locket. It was covered in seaweed, and the picture of a woman inside was almost unrecognizable. ' I found it in the wreck of his ship, some years later, but I didn't have a way to give it back to him, and he talked about his wife a lot so I figured he probably misses it.'
Then they parted ways and the rescue team finally found him. With very angry looking Artemis on board, who hugged him and then hit him upside the head , the moment she saw he was safe and sound. And when he met with Babs, she did the same thing.
And Dick came back home. And...he...really didn't know what to do.
No one would believe him, if he told them he met a merman.
So he decided to check where Kent Nelson was, to give him the amulet back.
So he went over to where Mr Nelson was supposed to live.
And the man, at the age of 108 opened the door.
Dick kind of didn't know what to say.
'Hi! A merman that you met 80 years ago sends his regards and also gives you your locket back!' probably wouldn't sound good.
So he just introduces himself awkwardly and shows man the locket.
And Mr Nelson smiles, and the corners of his eyes wrinkle and there might be some tears there too, when he takes the locket in his hands, the picture of Inza inside.
He invites Dick in for tea. And he turns out to be the nicest old man you could ever meet.
And they talk about their encounters, and they share other stories.
They spend the whole evening together, and then swap adresses, so they can write letters to each other.
And Dick comes back home, and resigns from the space missions.
But he's looking for a good submarine, and he's planning an underwater expedition in the near future.
And Mr Nelson is on the list of his crew members.
