A great find and beautiful shot of this mantis; however you requested critique:

I like the sharpness of this kung fu master in it's natural environment with natural colours and soft bokeh in the background. The flash was used very well ! ( don't ask me how) The composition works very well with the line to the lower left corner and a part of a leaf on the right. The parallel branch at the bottomΒ emphesizes the posture in this composition in a diagonal line and the colour of the mantis gives a nice complementary colour contrast to the background which makes it stand out. The POV is really nice, because the insect is looking right at you.

You could clone out the leaf(ves) on the right. Maybe it works. The blurred part on the left is a bit distracting, imho, and doesn't really add anything, but can easily be cloned out. I know you stack your images and that's why I think it's too bad two legs aren't sharp. Perhaps you've got more shots to make a stack?Β

Keep up the good work!Β Β

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write the critique
You have a good point about the leaves to the right. I try to edit my photos as little as possible, but when you pointed it out here I sure will do something about it.
The fun thing with mantises, and some other insects, is that they are always looking straight at you. Or at least their eyes create that illusion Β

Well, this one isn't stacked. It's just a single image taken on free hand. I usually never bring a tripod when I am out hiking. It's just too much unwanted weight

It's my pleasure.

You can try it, and if it doesn't work, no harm is done. I'm on a Dutch site where I get feedback like this and I really appreciate that.

Yeah, with the dragonflies and their big eyes it's especially so. Imho, the POV emphesizes that he's looking right at you in this frame, as you can't see his left front leg because of that.

It's still a great shot and you got lucky to find one. The tripod and hiking sure is a hassle! Mine is small, but it's still 4kg.

What site is that?

I've been thinking of finding a smaller one. The one I have now is awesome when it's used but its pretty long and bulky to be carried along.

It's zoom.nl ;Β  A Dutch photography and Adobe based magazine with a website you can share your photos at small size for free. I've gotten some feedback on my minimal photos when lines were crooked. Nobody on Google +, Youpic, Flickr or DA pointed this out, so it's nice to get feedback on that (comments are in Dutch) . Nature shots don't really 'score' on that site, though.

It shouldn't be too small. The wind knocked over mine; the camera and telelens were lying in a puddle of water/mud! My Sigma 135-400 can't be repaired because of the lack of spare parts.Β  Sigma isn't taking that change, but it still works.Β  Don't buy a Cullman, because the attachmentplate onto the camera - which is screwed on - will move. I think a clipping one will prevent that.. A heavy lens will move quickly, so you can't walk in the field with it.Β Β  Long is good I suppose, mine is too short for some minimal shots.
