Not to worry! Basically the game designers got a lot of feedback about the Ranger being under-powered compared to the other classes, and noticed fewer people playing Ranger. So they re-made the class on their website, which the community responded quite well to. I'm playing it in a campaign at the moment, and it definitely feels better to me than the previous Ranger did.

September last year, article's dated. I watched the Unearthed Arcana* developments like a hawk (waiting for more Feats) so most players might not even know about them if they just go by Players Handbook and don't check the site much.
Talk to your Game Master about re-making your character if you like the new rules
*UA is basically their "throw stuff at playtest and see what sticks" approach to making expansions to the game. It's all official D&D material, but some GMs won't play with it because it's not in a published book, so always best to check.
