Description I didn't have super high hopes for Needle, so imagine my surprise when he came out looking awesome. His legs are the smoothest and most properly-shaped on them all, so far, and the ammo belts are just as I envisioned them.

So how did you get the body so smooth and defined?

I'm attempting making maquettes of some of my characters this summer through the next year or two. I've purchased a bunch of super sculpey and tools, and read up on the art of sculpting such items. However, there is also a niggling paucity of detail concerning technique. A lot of guys finish their statues with easy-ornate textures instead of well-defined, smooth surfaces like the anime figurines.

I've honestly never done research on technique (no idea what easy-ornate textures are), but I can tell you what I did differently with this guy.

Unlike with the others, whose limbs and parts I just slapped onto the wire+foil frame, I actually built up Needle Man's form even more first, by using white sculpey (purchaseable in large quantities for cheaper than the little individual blocks) to block out all his curves. Then, when I slapped on the real colors (on top of the white), they remained smooth. That extra buffer layer between the finished surface and the skeleton is what made this one work so well. On the basic level, I pressed and flattened every piece with a polymer plastic roller first, and then smoothed out minor imperfections with my fingertips once each component was mounted.
Hope that helps?
