Description I found my way back to my original shading technique -dodge and burn- for this picture.

I have decided a few months ago that I will leave this technique behind because people told me that dodge and burn actually make an image ugly, and not at all neat. They make it look metallic. I was scared away by these comments, so used the 'double cutout' method for later images. However, I just... decided to use it again.

I know that professionals say that you should stay away from these two tools but I do think that an image can look nice if you know what you are doing with dodge and burn. I decided I will sometimes return to it for realistic images. I have used these tools for years now and know their properties like the back of my hand.

Made on Photoshop CS4 completely with mouse, with simply adding color and then used dodge and burn to create shadows and forms of the background.

if you hadn´t wrote that you did this with dodge and burn, I wouldn´t even recognized this (my english is dieing again..I´m sorry)
And if you are used to it, and when you know HOW to use it, it doesn´t matter what you use for shading.
I, for example, just use the airbrush for everything that does not have to do with outlining. I use it for coloring AND for shading. nothing else, cuz for me its the best way to draw my pictures.

In my eyes, the shading and coloring with these both tools you use looks very fine for me. As I said above, I don´t see any difference to other shading techniques.
Also I was very surprised that you did this all with mouse, I wouldn´t be able to draw such a picture with mouse...you got my respect!

Thank you for the nice comment.

I also think that every artist has the right to use whatever tools they deem right for their art. Others have no right to tell them that the chosen tools make the art ugly -they literally say that you should stay away from them like the plague. Any shading/lightning can look ugly on any art if the creator doesnt know what he/she is doing.

But yes, I didnt have truly a choice on the mouse painting either. It is a lineart I made a few years ago. Recently, luckily, I was able to buy a tablet and a stylus pen -the cheaper one- so now finally I can draw easier. Mouse takes a lot of time and a steady hand, but I still colored and shaded on the computer because sadly Photoshop Touch lacks dodge and burn, and the smudge tool on mine is messed up. I wish they would complete that application with them and would fix the issue.

Sure! Imaige if everyne would draw the same. The world, DeviantArt, everything would be boring as hell.
I see this mostly on Spyro and MLP fanarts..they look all the same, doesn´t matter what artist did the picture....I can´t see this stuff really X__x
So doesn´t matter what the "real" arists say, draw however you want.
